The possibility of life after death is a significant theme in cinema, in which ghosts return to the world of the living to wrap up unfinished business, console their survivors, visit lovers or just enjoy a well-wreaked scaring. This work focuses on film depictions of survival after death, from meetings with the ghost of Elvis to AIDS-related ghosts: apparitions, hauntings, mediumship, representations of heaven, angels, near-death experiences, possession, poltergeists and all the other ways in which the living interact with the dead on screen.

The work opens with a historical perspective, which outlines the development of pre-cinematic technology for "projecting" phantoms, and discusses the use of these skills in early ghost cinema. English-language sound films are then examined thematically with topics ranging from the expiation of sins to "hungry" ghosts. Six of the most significant films, Dead of Night, A Matter of Life and Death, The Innocents, The Haunting, The Shining, and Jacob''s Ladder, are given a detailed analysis. A conclusion, filmography, and bibliography follow.

The condition known as ‘adolescence’ is largely an artefact of advance industrial societies. How, then, do those who are labelled as ‘adolescent’ conduct their everyday lives, and what are their values? Originally published in 1980, this book seeks to provide some answers, amplified with a great deal of illustrative material, and many detailed observations.

The first chapter outlines a theoretical position, based on the conception of the person as essentially perceptive and active. The development and application of the research method is then described: this consists of an informal and loosely structured interview, by means of which the participants were able to give lengthy and vivid accounts of their experiences. Four broad topics are examined in detail: family life, relationships with other adolescents, formal and informal work, and the development of ‘self-values’. One of the most striking findings of the research is the fact that many boys and girls, denied the possibility of deep involvement with other areas of activity, have attached an almost obsessive importance to their immediate social world: here, at least, it is possible to gain some degree of control. The author indicates that social class differences are evident at many points, and expresses his belief that such differences among adolescents are likely to intensify rather than decrease during the coming decades.

The book concludes by relating the social-psychological findings to the broader social and historical context. In contrast to the common view of adolescence as a period during which identity is discovered, contemporary adolescence might be viewed as a struggle for psychological survival under conditions where for many the development of a strong personal identity is scarcely possible.

In the 1960s T. C. Lethbridge’s challenging, probing studies were well established. First published in 1969, The Monkey''s Tail was as remarkable as his previous investigations. Mr Lethbridge – who was trained in Natural Science before he became an archaeologist – had for years been unable to accept Darwin’s theory of Evolution. In this book he examines the theory in the light of his observations and experience. He found it wanting in every particular which he examined.

In the first part of the book Mr Lethbridge puts his case against the theory of Evolution, and in the second part he shows that the known facts of Evolution could be equally well explained in another way. He had for many years been working on the ‘fringe’ study of Extra Sensory Perception, and he used that study to present an alternative theory to Darwinism.

Mr Lethbridge was well aware that much more evidence was needed before his ideas could either be proved or disproved finally; but they do provide a reasoned explanation based on years of careful study. The theory he put forward was not only more compatible with observed scientific fact at the time, but less at variance with accepted religious beliefs.
