When Gläntan, Gothenburgs LGBTQI+ monument by artist Conny Karlsson Lundgren, was inaugurated at Esperantoplatsen in 2023, it marked the culmination of a multi-year process in which art, research, and participation came together. The monument makes visible the struggle for LGBTQI+ rights while reflecting the citys transformation throughout history and into the future. This book tells the story of the journey from concept to realization. Through photographs, archival materials, documentation, and reflective texts, readers are invited to follow the art project through the workshops, conversations, and collaborations that shaped both the monument and its broader context. The book also offers perspectives on Gläntans continuing role as a place of memory, encounters, and future narratives. Artists participating in the preliminary study included, among others, Sam Hultin, Marie Falksten, Leif Holmstrand, Kolbeinn Karlsson, Axel A. Karlsson Rixon, Anna Linder, and Rudy Loewe. The essays are written by Rebecka Katz Thor, Patrik Steorn, and Andria Nyberg Forshage.

The Gulf of Guinea volume is part of a series on the Large Marine Ecosystems. This volume combines the latest research on the Gulf of Guinea from scientists working primarily in the region and from Europe. It covers the dynamics of the oceanic and coastal waters of the region, the major biological resources, pollution in the marine environment and the socio-economics and governance of marine fisheries. A significant number of new data sets, including some which have been repatriated from outside the region, are now made available through this publication. The combination of the various chapters underlines the interlinkages that exist between the interannual and seasonal dynamical behaviour of the oceanic offshore waters and the living marine resources along the coast, and the direct effect they have on the livelihoods of the populations living throughout the Gulf of Guinea. The volume is intended for those who have a general interest in the region as well as those who work professionally in the field. It will also be of immense value to resource managers and policy-makers as a demonstration project on how research can help solve the pressing problems of economic and food security in coastal regions.

Privatization of large national enterprises has been the most far-reaching of Latin America’s dramatic structural reforms, the objective being to underpin fiscal stability by shedding huge capital requirements. I’ve done them all, and I’m not talking about stage, screen, and television. I stopped taking drugs in the 1970s and stopped smoking in the 1980s. I ceased drinking in the 1990s when I needed a liver transplant and my doctors told me they wouldn’t do it if I continued drinking. So, I stopped, got the transplant, and became a friend of Bill W. Stopping was the best thing I ever did, second to marrying Maj. My substance abuse started, like most people’s, in high school through peer pressure. It progressed while I was on the stage and in the Air Force, where alcohol was the drug of choice. The problem continued as I worked in motion pictures where the day ended with drinks. When I ? nally made it big in television, I was drinking a case of champagne a day. I tell myself that I did this because of my insecurities about being at the top, but it also tasted good. Looking back and having read some of the things in this book, I realize that I have the addictive personality and the genetic predisposition to be a substance abuser. All that was necessary was a situation in which I was near drugs and had peer pressure to get me going.

In a discipline which essentially studies how modern man came to be, it is remarkable that there are hardly any conceptual tools to describe change. This is due to the history of the western intellectual and scientific tradition, which for a long time favoured mechanics over dynamics, and the study of stability over that of change. Change was primarily deemed due to external events (in archaeology mainly climatic or 'environmental').Revolutionary innovations in the natural and life sciences, often (erroneously) referred to as 'chaos theory', suggest that there are ways to overcome this problem. A wide range of processes can be described in terms of dynamic systems, and modern computing methods enable us to investigate many of their properties. This volume presents a cogent argument for the use of such approaches, and a discussion of a number of its aspects by a range of scientists from the humanities, social and natural sciences, and archaeology.
