This book deals with the first three campaigns of the German-Israeli Tell Iẓṭabba Excavation Project, conducted by the Institute for Classical Archaeology and Christian Archaeology / Archaeological Museum of the University of Münster and the Sonia and Marco Nadler Institute of Archaeology of Tel Aviv University, under the direction of Achim Lichtenberger and Oren Tal. Tell Iẓṭabba is the location of the town of Nysa (Scythopolis), established in the Seleucid period, a short-lived Hellenistic site founded under Antiochus IV in the 160s BCE and destroyed under John Hyrcanus in 107 BCE. The excavations shed light upon the material culture of this period, as well as producing evidence of earlier (Early Bronze Age) and later (Byzantine) occupation. The highest mountain in Greece and also the seat of the ancient Greek gods, Olympus has been more or less omnipresent in mythology since ancient times. Over the ages, the concept of it has fluctuated elusively between the real mountain and the supernatural seat of the gods. The idea of it as the home of the gods detached itself from the actual mountain and became universally applicable. Achim Lichtenberger investigates the multilayered phenomenon of Olympus by first describing the ways in which human beings have imagined the mountain, then outlining the mountain in its geographical context, and finally tracing the idea of the holy mountain throughout the Mediterranean region. In the process, Olympus turns out to provide key testimony to Greek cultural history, and its attractiveness and ideal quality are exemplary for Greek culture and religion. - E-bokTyska, 2021

The Roman Emperor Septimius Severus (193-211 A.D.) originated from the North-African town of Lepcis Magna. His reign is seen as a time in which profound changes within Roman society became evident resulting in many provincials achieving important positions in the Roman state. The book examines this development from the perspective of a possible use of the non-Italian home and deities of the Emperor within Imperial iconographics. Important evidence for that are the native deities propagated by the Emperor. The book further discusses the relationship of Severus towards Roman gods and a possible sacralisation of the Emperor which might suggest changing attitudes towards the Emperor. The latter however has to be critically assessed and asked who was responsible for certain images. Was it the Imperial house or were it other groups?
