Influence of Level of Extroversion, Locus of Control and Gender on Listening and Reading Proficiency in Second Language Acquisition
Inbunden, Engelska, 2017

Skickas inom 5-8 vardagar
This book is an investigation into the correlation between level of extroversion, orientation of locus of control and gender. Level of extroversion and gender are widely recognised as key factors influencing the process of Second Language Acquisition, although there remains much debate as to the nature of this influence. Locus of Control has equally been identified as a key predictor of success in academic learning. Taking these points into consideration, the authors analyze the correlation between these three key factors and success in reading and listening on students of English at the university level. The investigation includes both a quantitative analysis and qualitative explanatory interviews.

Musical Intelligence and Its Impact on English Pronunciation Skills in the Process of Second Language Acquisition
Inbunden, Engelska, 2019
635 kr
Skickas inom 5-8 vardagar
This book delves into the convergence between musical intelligence and L2 pronunciation skills. It starts with a detailed description of the theory of Multiple Intelligences proposed by Howard Gardner (1983) with particular reference to musical intelligence. It also constitutes an attempt at describing the relationship between musical intelligence and other intelligences. A detailed description of the prosodic features of speaker's pronunciation skills is the "prelude" to the methodology of research, as well as the research results, which take into consideration some of the most problematic issues, including the outcomes obtained from Wing's musical intelligence test and pronunciation test measured by three independent English native speakers and by Praat.

Sociolinguistic analysis of Mexican-American bilingualism: Spanglish as a sociocultural phenomenon
Inbunden, Engelska, 2020
645 kr
Skickas inom 5-8 vardagar
The main purpose of the book is to describe the two linguistic-cultural phenomena arising from mass emigration of Mexicans to Los Angeles: Spanish-English bilingualism and Spanglish. The main thesis of the research is the correlation between Spanish-English bilingualism and Spanglish. As public opinion deemed Spanglish as a blocker for linguistic advancement or degraded Spanish, it is actually a method of enhancing the linguistic system. That is why, not only does the research contest the use of such terms, but it also argues that bilingualism is a much more compound and adequate term as well as an analytic framework for the study of bilingual productions. Spanglish should be understood as a form of bilingualism, a hybrid enriching the linguistic system.

Design and Management of the Virtual Learning Environment for Foreign Language Instruction in Adult Learner Groups
Inbunden, Engelska, 2020

Skickas inom 5-8 vardagar
The progress of ubiquitous information technologies has led to the arrival of entirely new environments where interaction amongst its users takes place. The means of communication, learning environments and methods of enhancing students’ competence have changed in both academic and professional settings. The book aims to investigate if the implementation of a virtual learning environment into regular foreign language instruction, as an augmentation of the regular classroom practice, has an impact on adult learners’ speaking (productive skills), listening (receptive skills) and grammatical competence. However, what was meant as a localised study became the new normal and a global reality as the coronavirus impacted all aspects of education.

Energising Directed Motivational Currents through Learners’ Agency
Inbunden, Engelska, 2021
585 kr
Skickas inom 5-8 vardagar
This book attempts to demystify concerns surrounding a novel motivational construct known as a Directed Motivational Current. The study aimed at exploring whether a high sense of efficacy may support a person in transforming short-spanned motivational episodes into longitudinal engagement typical for the DMC framework. To this end, a sequential exploratory mixed methodology was used. Subsequently, a link between well-anchored efficacy beliefs and the rate at which DMCs occur was indeed discovered. This was further reinforced by the outcomes of personalised interviews. Eventually, the research yielded several noteworthy conclusions, including the fact that imbuing the DMC structure with elements of efficacy building may lead to long-term, sustained behaviour in a foreign language classroom.

Linguo-Cultural Perspective on Traditional Values
Inbunden, Engelska, 2021
606 kr
Skickas inom 5-8 vardagar
The main purpose of the publication is to present a linguo-cultural picture of traditional values (such as the value of life, freedom, dignity, family, religion, community, truth, good, beauty, and God) reflected in Anglo-American and Polish paremiology. The author analyzes the proverbs with the use of semantic approach and divides them into several thematic categories and subcategories related to the sphere of values. The paremiological analysis carried out from a contrastive perspective provides additional evidence to support the claim that, despite some widespread axiological views common to languages, there exist distinct differences characteristic only of a given linguo-culture, naturally caused by different, among others, geographical, historical, social, and cultural environments.

Predicates of Gratification in English and Polish
A Semantic-Syntactic Perspective
Inbunden, Engelska, 2022
709 kr
Skickas inom 5-8 vardagar
This monograph presents a contrastive-corpus analysis of the semantic category of gratification. It takes as a case study the verb reward and its various forms in Polish and in English, as prototypical of the semantics of gratification. The study, set predominantly in the framework of semantic syntax, and drawing from the theory of valence and frame semantics, adopts a corpus-driven and usage-based approach to language analysis. By exploring the syntactic realization and distribution of arguments opened by the predicates of gratification in the two languages, the book offers new insights into language representation in English and Polish, and addresses the combinatoricity of human thought and cognitive mechanisms reflected in the lexicalization patterns of the situation of rewarding.

Anglo-American and Polish Proverbs with Direct Nominal Exponents of Traditional Values

The main purpose of the publication is to present a linguo-cultural picture of traditional values (such as the value of life, freedom, dignity, family, religion, community, truth, good, beauty, and God) reflected in Anglo-American and Polish paremiological units. The author analyses the proverbs featuring direct nominal exponents of traditional values with the use of semantic approach and divides them into several thematic categories and subcategories related to the sphere of values. Paremiological analysis carried out from a contrastive perspective provides additional evidence to support the claim that, despite some widespread axiological views common to languages, there exist distinct differences characteristic only of a given linguo-culture, naturally caused by different, among others, geographical, historical, social, and cultural environments.

The Language of Securitization in Contemporary Slovak Public Discourse
Inbunden, Engelska, 2024
530 kr
Skickas inom 5-8 vardagar
Monograph focuses on the analysis of securitizing speech acts produced by major actors in Slovak public discourse, primarily left and right populists. In the case studies attention is centered on the nature of produced utterances, especially at the lexical level, with an emphasis on speech tactics and discourse strategies. With these intentions in mind, the researchers investigate how alleged threats are verbalized, which linguistic devices the producers of threat articulations most frequently employ in presenting them, and what persuasive effects can result from their usage. The authors also focused their research on metaphors and used the tools of corpus linguistics in their analysis. This research falls within the fields of political linguistics and linguistic pragmatics. In their analyses, the authors focus on pressing social issues such as migration, the war in Ukraine, public health issues, economic crisis, and other 'pre-election' populist topics.
