This book is dedicated to the issue of animal metaphor together with its intricacies and internal complexity. Its main objective is to present a unified picture of the role animal terms have played in the shape of English and other natural languages. The author addresses such aspects of animal metaphor as the problem of animal names used as surnames, so-called verbal and adjectival zoosemy, or the use of names of animal body parts with reference to people. The cognitively-oriented analysis is carried out in terms of the Conceptual Metaphor Theory, which is capable of accounting for semantic change in a panchronic perspective. The results show that virtually any facet of humanity, which is beyond the norm, may be viewed, perceived, conceived of and expressed in animal terms.

The main purpose of the book is to explore whether native speakerism has an influence on Polish language schools, using the explanatory mixed-methods design. The findings show that the ideology is present in Poland, but it is manifested in complex and subtle ways. Most prominent findings indicate a wage gap between teachers considered native speakers and their Polish counterparts, and the discrepancy between the levels of education required of the two groups, with native speakers often being employed without necessary qualifications. Finally, the findings suggest that Polish teacher education programmes should expose budding teachers to relevant literature regarding native speakerism and other issues related to native and non-native speaker status so that they can critically examine them.

This book analyses Tolkien’s approach to the depiction of vices and virtues in three Middle-earth works, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. While providing a general synthetising overview of up-to-date research in the topic, its uniqueness consists in the fact that it goes beyond what has yet been written in the field by attempting to present a complex comparative analysis of the role of the seven cardinal vices and their opposing virtues as recognised by the Catholic Church in the three Tolkien’s works. This book has a threefold aim. The first is to determine how much Tolkien’s depiction of vices and virtues is concordant with their theological understanding. The second is to explore to what extent, in depicting them, Tolkien adhered to the principles of his own theory of sub-creation and the theology of fantasy. And the third is to investigate the differences and similarities in the depiction of the vices and virtues between his three major works.
