In order to know whether or not the corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative and its related commitments are actually improving the company's performance it is necessary to have in place procedures for reporting and verification, each of which are important tools for measuring change and communicating those changes to the company's stakeholders. Sustainability reporting should be broadly construed and has been described as communicating with stakeholders about a firm's economic, environmental and social management and performance. Verification, often referred to as "e;assurance"e;, is a related concept that involves measurement made through on-site inspections and reviews of management systems to determine levels of conformity to particular criteria set out in sustainability codes and standards to which the company may have agreed to adhere. The scope and sophistication of CSR reporting has come a long way since the idea first came up in the mid-1990s, when only a handful of companies reported on social responsibility issues and activities in addition to their regular financial reports. Today almost all of the largest global companies produce reports on their environmental policies and activities, often providing interested parties with a whole range of documents that can be accessed in a separate yet highly visible section of the company website. Other international standards, such as the UN Global Compact, explicitly incorporate reporting as a fundamental requirement for demonstrating a commitment to sustainability. While certain CSR and corporate sustainability disclosures have now become minimum legal requirements in some jurisdictions, in general such disclosures are still a voluntary matter and companies have some leeway as to the scope of their disclosures and how they are presented to investors and other stakeholders. Some companies continue to limit their disclosures to those are specifically required by regulators; however, most companies have realized that they need to pay attention to the issues raised by institutional investors and other key stakeholders and make sure that they are covered in the disclosure program. At the other extreme, there are companies that have embraced sustainability as integral to their brands and have elected to demonstrate their commitment by preparing and disseminating additional disclosures that illustrate how they have woven sustainability into their long-term strategies and day-to-day operational activities.Companies have taken different approaches to formatting and presenting the information in their sustainability reports and CSR communications strategies have evolved beyond reports to include certifications and rating systems and other means of describing and assessing organizational performance with respect to CSR.This book is intended to be a practical introduction to sustainability reporting and communications that begins by discussing material legal and regulatory considerations and the some of the major sustainability reporting frameworks and then continues with detailed illustrations of how companies might create and distribute their sustainability reports and develop and implement their CSR communications strategies.

The commitments and activities associated with any sustainability initiative should begin with compliance with laws and regulations promulgated by the governmental entities have jurisdiction over the firm's activities; however, the law has not been able to keep up and the gap has been filled by sustainability standards promulgated from a variety of sources. This book describes the most well-known sustainability standards and instruments as of the date of publication referenced below. While the sheer volume of initiatives can make the process of review challenging and daunting, particularly for sustainable entrepreneurs with limited resources trying to put together an initial set of sustainability commitments and targets for their fledgling businesses, the number and diversity of initiatives available offers the possibility of flexibility, avoids a "e;one-size fits all approach"e; and increases the chances that firms will be able to find support to address concerns of particular interest. Corporate social responsibility ("e;CSR"e;) is like any other important management initiative and requires proactive leadership from the top of the organization. In fact, it is clear that the "e;tone at the top"e; is an important factor in the success or failure of any CSR initiative and that the directors, executive officers and senior managers of the organization are uniquely positioned to act as internal champions of CSR and proactively communicate with everyone in the organization on a daily basis about the impact of new environmental and social products, services and activities (e.g., philanthropic projects) and CSR-related systems and processes. These leaders must also commit to investing the time and effort necessary to explain the organization's CSR initiatives to clients and customers and other stakeholders and develop and implement appropriate metrics for tracking and reporting progress. Although corporate social responsibility, or CSR, has been adopted by many companies, few of them are practicing it with any formal strategy, and the common situation seems to be a portfolio of disparate CSR programs and initiatives, some of which support core strategy and others of which appear adjacent and discretionary. The diversity of potential CSR initiatives is one issue (e.g., companies may simultaneously disburse funding for community activities, provide grants for nonprofits/NGOs, launch environmental sustainability programs to reduce energy and resource use and engage in "e;cause"e; marketing and comprehensive system-level efforts to remake their entire value chain); however, developing a strategic orientation is complicated by the fact that each company has its own unique set of drivers and motivations for CSR and ideas and responsibilities for those initiatives come from all parts and levels of the organization. Moreover, while it makes sense to identify a specific business logic and rationale for each CSR initiative, the reality is that companies often take on causes and projects that have little or no connection to their core competencies or business strategy. Serious interest in CSR strategy has been driven by the emergence of two challenging environmental conditions that must now be addressed by all companies: the growing interest in sustainability and the need to engage with a broad range of stakeholders beyond the owners of the business. These conditions have not made strategic planning any easier, given that they expand the levels of unpredictability and risk in any company's environment, and the response has been the development of a new discipline: strategic planning for sustainability. Strategic planning for sustainability is far from easy or precise, if only because it requires that simultaneous consideration be given not only to economic performance and development, but also to environmental protection and the social wellbeing of employees and other persons and groups outside of the organization. Companies and their managers are struggling to find and deploy the tools and practices that are necessary for balancing and reconciling the "e;triple bottom line"e; of profits, planet and people.
