Fast and Efficient Context-Aware Services gives a thorough explanation of the state-of-the-art in Context-Aware-Services (CAS). The authors describe all major terms and components of CAS, defining context and discussing the requirements of context-aware applications and their use in 3rd generation services. The text covers the service creation problem as well as the network technology alternatives to support these services and discusses active and programmable networks in detail. It gives an insight into the practical approach followed in the CONTEXT project, supplying concrete guidelines for building successful context-aware services. Fast and Efficient Context-Aware Services:* Provides comprehensive and in-depth information on state-of-the-art CAS technology.* Proposes a system architecture for CAS creation and delivery, discussing service management and active network layers.* Describes the service lifecycle functional architecture, covering service authoring, customization, invocation, and assurance.* Explains system design considerations and details, system evaluation criteria, test-bed requirements, and evaluation results. Fast and Efficient Context-Aware Services is an invaluable resource for telecommunications developers, researchers in academia and industry, advanced students in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, telecoms operators, as well as telecommunication management and operator personnel.

Among the leading challenges faced by systems managers today is the coherent management of network resources in a multi-domain, multi-environment. The MISA Project - Management of Integrated SDH and ATM Networks - brought together researchers from 17 organizations to explore and advance the state of the art in developing enabling mechanisms for end-to-end management solutions across multi-domain and multi-technology networks. These mechanisms enable interoperability between management domains, between heterogeneous network technology, and between service and network management functions in a multi-provider environment.Multi-Domain Communication Management Systems reports on the experiences of the MISA Project researchers. It provides guidance for the deployment of multi-domain management systems and offers a solid basis for the implementation of solutions to the challenges of converging data network technologies. System managers will learn the techniques and mechanisms for end-to-end management problems; network management vendors will understand the benefits and limitations of current practices and standards as they apply to multi-domain management issues; and students and researchers of advanced communications management will discover important concepts and issues related to the management of networks.

Irrespective of whether we use economic or societal metrics, the Internet is one of the most important technical infrastructures in existence today. It will be a catalyst for much of our innovation and prosperity in the future. A competitive Europe will require Internet connectivity and services beyond the capabilities offered by current technologies. Future Internet research is therefore a must. This book is published in full compliance with the Open Access publishing initiative; it is based on the research carried out within the Future Internet Assembly (FIA). It contains a sample of representative results from the recent FIA meetings spanning a broad range of topics, all being of crucial importance for the future Internet. The book includes 32 contributions and has been structured into the following sections, each of which is preceded by a short introduction:Foundations: architectural issues; socio-economic issues; security and trust; and experiments and experimental design. Future Internet Areas: networks, services, and content; and applications.

Irrespective of whether we use economic or societal metrics, the Internet is one of the most important technical infrastructures in existence today. It will serve as a catalyst for much of our innovation and prosperity in the future. A competitive Europe will require Internet connectivity and services beyond the capabilities offered by current technologies. Future Internet research is therefore a must. The Future Internet Assembly (FIA) is a successful and unique bi-annual conference that brings together participants of over 150 projects from several distinct but interrelated areas in the EU Framework Programme 7. The 20 full papers included in this volume were selected from 40 submissions, and are preceded by a vision paper describing the FIA Roadmap. The papers have been organized into topical sections on the foundations of Future Internet, the applications of Future Internet, Smart Cities, and Future Internet infrastructures.

Co-editors of the volume are: Federico Álvarez, Alessandro Bassi, Michele Bezzi, Laurent Ciavaglia, Frances Cleary, Petros Daras, Hermann De Meer, Panagiotis Demestichas, John Domingue, Theo G. Kanter, Stamatis Karnouskos, Srdjan Krčo, Laurent Lefevre, Jasper Lentjes, Man-Sze Li, Paul Malone, Antonio Manzalini, Volkmar Lotz, Henning Müller, Karsten Oberle, Noel E. O'Connor, Nick Papanikolaou, Dana Petcu, Rahim Rahmani, Danny Raz, Gaël Richards, Elio Salvadori, Susana Sargento, Hans Schaffers, Joan Serrat, Burkhard Stiller, Antonio F. Skarmeta, Kurt Tutschku, Theodore ZahariadisThe Internet is the most vital scientific, technical, economic and societal set of infrastructures in existenceand in operation today serving 2.5 billion users. Continuing its developments would secure much of the upcoming innovation and prosperity and it would underpin the sustainable growth in economic values and volumes needed in the future. Future Internet infrastructures research is therefore a must. The Future Internet Assembly (FIA) is a successful conference that brings together participants of over 150 research projects from several distinct yet interrelated areas in the European Union Framework Programme 7 (FP7). The research projects are grouped as follows: the network of the future as infrastructure connecting and orchestrating the future Internet of people, computers, devices, content, clouds and things; cloud computing, Internet of Services and advanced software engineering; the public-private partnership projects on Future Internet; Future Internet Research and Experimentation (FIRE). The 26 full papers included in this volume were selected from 45 submissions. Theyare organized in topical sections named: software driven networks, virtualization, programmability and autonomic management; computing and networking clouds; internet of things; and enabling technologies and economic incentives.

Although IP and WDM technologies are expected to become the dominant network technologies, they will be introduced gradually to complement and replace ATM and SDH network solutions. This text reviews and researches results for the deployment and management of IP over WDM networks with guaranteed service level agreements. Design details cover the integrated management requirements and architectures needed to ensure direct and seamless deployment and integration of IP and WDM. Verification of the management and networking concepts has been performed on a research testbed built from WDM rings and IP routing equipment as part of the WINMAN project, which is a European Union-sponsored research project. The volume concludes with an outlook on the expected evolutions of network management and the deployment of optical networks.
