Erfolgreiche Innovation hängt entscheidend von der effektiven Zusammenarbeit zwischen Forschungssystem, Industrie und Anwendern ab. Dem deutschen Innovationssystem wird oft vorgeworfen, dass Spitzenleistungen in der Forschung nicht konsequent und schnell genug in neue Produkte umgesetzt werden. Die Entwicklung und Anwendung neuer Werkstoffe ist beispielhaft dafür, dass Transferprozesse außerordentlich langwierig und komplex sind. Es gibt dennoch gute Beispiele für erfolgreiche neue Produkte und Systeme, die erst durch bahnbrechende Entwicklungen in der Materialforschung ermöglicht wurden. Am Beispiel von ausgewählten Projekten werden Merkmale und Bedingungen erfolgreicher Innovation dargestellt. Zugleich wird gezeigt, welche Barrieren den wirksamen Transfer in diesem Technologiefeld behindern und wo Ansatzpunkte für deren Überwindung liegen.
