The Ninth International Conference on Reliable Software Technologies, Ada- Europe 2004, took place in Palma, Spain, June 14–18, 2004. It was sponsored by Ada-Europe, the European federation of national Ada societies, and Ada- Spain, in cooperation with ACM SIGAda. It was organized by members of the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB). As in past years, the conference comprised a three-day technical program, during which the papers contained in these proceedings were presented, along with vendor presentations. The technical program was bracketed by two tutorial days, when the attendees had the opportunity to catch up on a variety of topics related to the ?eld, at both introductory and advanced levels. Furthermore, the conference was accompanied by an exhibition where vendors presented their products for supporting reliable-software development. This volumecomprises the ?nal versionsof the technicalpapers presented at the UML 2004 conference held in Lisbon (Portugal), October 11-15, 2004. UML 2004 was the seventh conference in a series of annual UML conferences. The series started in 1998 and was located at Mulhouse (France); the following years saw the conference move to Fort Collins (USA) in 1999, York (UK) in 2000,Toronto (Canada) in 2001,Dresden (Germany) in 2002,San Francisco (USA) in 2003, and now Lisbon (Portugal) in 2004. During this time, the UML conference became one of the leading conferences in the area of object-oriented modeling. While in the ?rst years the focus of the conference was on the scienti?c investigation of the Uni?ed Modeling Language (UML), which had just been adopted by the Object Management Group (OMG) at the time, the focus has changed in recent years to innovations in techniques such as metamodeling, model transformations, model validation and veri?cation, aspect orientation, and beyond. Many recent research activities have been especially stimulated by the Model Driven Architecture (MDA) initiative, started in 2000 by the OMG. The goal of MDA is the de?nition of a framework to enable the development of software purely based on models.In order to re?ect the changes of recent years, the conference series UML will be continued, from 2005 onwards,under thenameMODELS(MOdelDrivenEngineering,Languagesand Systems). The call for papers for UML 2004 encouraged authors around the world to submit 157abstractsand 135technicalpapers. Eachsubmissionwasreviewed by at least three referees, in most cases by four.

It was organized by members of Adalog, CS, UPS/IRIT and ONERA. Toulouse was certainly a very appropriate place for this conference. As the heart of the European aeronautic and space industry, it is a place where so- ware development leaves no place for failure. In the end, reliability is a matter of human skills. But these skills build upon methods, tools, components and c- trolled practices. By exposing the latest advances in these areas, the conference contributed to ful?lling the needs of a very demanding industry. As in past years, the conference comprised a three-day technical program, during which the papers contained in these proceedings were presented, along with vendor presentations. The technical program was bracketed by two tutorial days, when attendees had the opportunity to catch up on a variety of topics related to the ?eld, at both introductory and advanced levels. On Friday, a workshopon“QualityofServiceinComponent-BasedSoftwareEngineering”was held. Further, the conference was accompanied by an exhibition where vendors presented their reliability-related products.

The Sixth International Conference on Reliable Software Technologies, Ada- Europe 2001, took place in Leuven, Belgium, May 14-18, 2001. It was sponsored by Ada-Europe, the European federation of national Ada societies, in cooperation with ACM SIGAda, and it was organized by members of the K.U. Leuven and Ada- Belgium. This was the 21st consecutive year of Ada-Europe conferences and the sixth year of the conference focusing on the area of reliable software technologies. The use of software components in embedded systems is almost ubiquitous: planes fly by wire, train signalling systems are now computer based, mobile phones are digital devices, and biological, chemical, and manufacturing plants are controlled by software, to name only a few examples. Also other, non-embedded, mission-critical systems depend more and more upon software. For these products and processes, reliability is a key success factor, and often a safety-critical hard requirement. It is well known and has often been experienced that quality cannot be added to software as a mere afterthought. This also holds for reliability. Moreover, the reliability of a system is not due to and cannot be built upon a single technology. A wide range of approaches is needed, the most difficult issue being their purposeful integration. Goals of reliability must be precisely defined and included in the requirements, the development process must be controlled to achieve these goals, and sound development methods must be used to fulfill these non-functional requirements.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Reliable Software Technologies, Ada-Europe 2002, held in Vienna, Austria, in June 2002.The 24 revised full papers presented together with four invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the proceedings. The papers are organized in topical sections on embedded systems, case studies, real-time systems, high-integrity systems, Ada language issues, program analysis, tools, distributed systems, and libraries and APIs.
