This book brings together research on the spread of Japanese multinational firms around the world. The authors' research includes firms operating in the United States, Germany, Spain, Mexico, Italy, as well as countries in Southeast Asia. The continuing success of these firms provides a model for other countries and firms to understand and emulate. The contributors in this book demonstrate how Japanese multinationals manage the people in their overseas operations and have wide-ranging implications for multinational performance as well as the performance of the local economies in which they operate. It is a learning experience for the Japanese managers when they find a cultural conflict with local workers and have to find ways to overcome this conflict in order for the local affiliate to succeed. Finally, the authors draw conclusions that can be applied to multinational firms in other countries that are expanding into different cultures.

The decade long period of slow growth in Japan has raised provocative questions relating to theory development in international management. Japans "lost decade" has led to changes in both overall strategy and to increased variety in individual firm responses to slower growth. The combination of internal changes in the Japanese domestic business environment and external changes in the international environment has generated strong incentives for Japanese firms to seek new ways to structure and compete. These adjustments have necessitated changes not only in the management of Japanese firms domestically, but in overseas markets as well. This volume includes contributing chapters from authors based in Asia, Europe, and North America to examine how Japanese firms have responded to the challenge of a slower domestic economy and a more competitive international economy. Articles were selected to address three aspects of this issue: adaptation to domestic environmental changes, adjustments in inter-organizational relations, and the experience in foreign MNCs in Japan and Japanese MNCs abroad.

This text offers a comprehensive, up-to-date view of the global leadership field since the publication of the third edition of this volume in 2018. Focusing on leading across cultural, economic, social, national, and political boundaries simultaneously, Global Leadership: Research, Practice, and Development (fourth edition) presents an in-depth summary of the field’s past and latest studies and practices in a succinct and engaging style that helps both managers and students grasp the complexities of global leadership. The conceptual flow of the book follows the same pattern as the third edition. Users of previous editions will notice that the structure of the last edition has been retained, but each chapter has been updated, where relevant, with coverage of seminal research that has occurred in the field since the publication of the last edition of the book. Many of the tables remain but have been revised and updated to reflect the current state of research in the field. We believe this approach will be helpful to instructors who use Global Leadership: Research, Practice, and Development as a textbook as they will not have to significantly revise their lesson plans but rather can straightforwardly update them with new information from the existing chapters within their course designs.Importantly, Global Leadership: Research, Practice, and Development is also a valuable guide for executives and managers who work in the global context, graduate students of global leadership, international business, and general leadership classes, as well as for scholars and managers seeking a thorough understanding of the current research literature. PowerPoint slides and a list of suggested cases are available to further assist instructors.

Updates to the chapter on global leadership development, including material on international service learning approaches and other "best practice" examples. Significant updates to the chapters on responsible global leadership and leading global teams, accounting for recent advances in both disciplines. This edition will prove a useful guide for graduate students of global leadership, international business, and general leadership classes as well as scholars and managers seeking a thorough understanding of the field today.
