A rich empirical account of China's foreign economic policy towards Japan after World War Two, drawing on hundreds of recently declassified Chinese sources. Amy King offers an innovative conceptual framework for the role of ideas in shaping foreign policy, and examines how China's Communist leaders conceived of Japan after the war. The book shows how Japan became China's most important economic partner in 1971, despite the recent history of war and the ongoing Cold War divide between the two countries. It explains that China's Communist leaders saw Japan as a symbol of a modern, industrialised nation, and Japanese goods, technology and expertise as crucial in strengthening China's economy and military. For China and Japan, the years between 1949 and 1971 were not simply a moment disrupted by the Cold War, but rather an important moment of non-Western modernisation stemming from the legacy of Japanese empire, industry and war in China.

In this book, Amy K. King examines how violence between women in contemporary Caribbean and American texts is rooted in plantation slavery. Analyzing films, television shows, novels, short stories, poems, book covers, and paintings, King shows how contemporary media reuse salacious and stereotypical depictions of relationships between women living within the plantation system to confront its legacy in the present. The vestiges of these relationships--enslavers and enslaved women, employers and domestic servants, lovers and rivals--negate characters' efforts to imagine non-abusive approaches to power and agency. King's work goes beyond any other study to date to examine the intersections of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, class, ability, and nationality in U.S. and Caribbean depictions of violence between women in the wake of slavery.

In this engaging, approachable book, a pediatrician and a psychologist walk step by step through the transformational process of creating a trauma-informed practice. They begin with essential concepts such as the debate over “ACE screening,” then share how to prepare an organization for change, assess risks to relational health, support caregivers, use resilience-based interventions, and finally how to sustain a trauma-responsive practice. Reflecting the authors’ call for interdisciplinary collaboration, the book is presented as a dialogue between two experts, describing how they collaborated on their own practice transformation—including both the pitfalls and the factors that made the process successful.A growing body of research shows that early relational health is the essential factor in building resilience in children to buffer the effects of trauma and adversity and prevent toxic stress from occurring. This hands-on guide shows how to help build safe, stable, nurturing relationships between children and caregivers, and how to be responsive not just to children’s trauma, but to their parents’ as well. In the hands of Gillespie and King, what may seem like an overwhelming undertaking becomes one that we can—and must—undertake to fully support the health and wellbeing of children.CONTENTS INCLUDEThe ACE debate and ethical considerationsBuilding the case for resilienceNavigating barriers to safe, stable, nurturing relationshipsUnderstanding early relational healthSupporting caregivers to strengthen safe, stable, nurturing relationshipsBuilding caregiver–child relationshipsRevamping anticipatory guidanceDesigning and using efficacious interventions to support early relational health and heal traumaSupporting families that have experienced traumaAddressing physician overwhelmSustaining trauma-responsive practices

The celebrated novels of the Brontë sisters are well known for their gothic settings and wild landscapes filled with literary symbolism. Attention to the natural world was part of the Brontë milieu. From the wild heather of the Yorkshire moors to the cultivated roses of manor house gardens, the flora pervading each novel reflects the rebellion, romance and resilience in the Brontës’ literary landscapes and lives. In A Brontë Botany, explore the vivid and symbolic world of plants through the pages of classic novels such as Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. This beautifully researched volume uncovers how Charlotte, Emily, and Anne wove the natural world into their storytelling – not just as picturesque scenery, but as living, breathing elements of emotion, character, and fate.
