Fujiko Nakaya is one of Japan’s most important contemporary artists. Participating in the 1960s performances of the New York-based collective Experiments in Arts and Technology (E.A.T.), she became internationally renowned for her immersive fog artworks. First created for the Pepsi Pavilion at Expo ’70 in Osaka they defy traditional conventions of sculpture by generating temporary, atmospheric transformations that physically engage with the public. Driven by early ecological concerns, Nakaya’s ground-breaking work is based purely on water and air—elements that have particular significance in light of the climate crisis. From the artist’s early paintings to her fog sculptures, single-channel videos, installations and documentation that reveal Nakaya’s cultural and social references, this in-depth survey offers a comprehensive overview of the distinguished artist’s work.

The Untold History of Immersive Art At the intersection of art, architecture and design, environments create and transform space into an immersive experience, inviting the audience to engage and interact. So far, art history has been focused on the works of male artists mostly from the US and Europe. Inside Other Spaces: Environments by Women Artists 1956–1976 aims to signpost a different narrative by highlighting women’s fundamental contributions to this field. Redefining the canon, the exhibition features 11 pioneering women artists from three generations, spanning Asia, Europe, and the Americas, including Judy Chicago, Aleksandra Kasuba, and Lygia Clark. Given the experimental nature of such environ ments, many of these original works were deconstructed or destroyed. The detailed reconstructions, which are carried out with the help of restorers and based on archival photographs, construction plans, and material lists, are presented here for the first time. Conceived as a reference book for the historiography of environments, the publication comprises a wealth of visual material also on artists not featured in the show, such as Yayoi Kusama and Yoko Ono, providing leading scholars’ essays and extensive bibliographies on environments and individual artists. FEATURED ARTISTS: Lygia Clark, Aleksandra Kasuba, Marta Minujín, Maria Nordman,Faith Wilding, Tsuruko Yamazaki

Skank Bloc Bologna: Alternative Art Spaces since 1977 is a book edited by Roberto Pinto and Francesco Spampinato that reconstructs the history of nonprofit exhibition spaces in Bologna from 1977 up to the present. Whether individual initiatives, cooperative enterprises, or social centers, the spaces featured in this volume devised the real “Bologna model”: one-of-a-kind, compared both to the situation in other Italian cities and to the international scene. The book’s title references a 1978 song by the English post-punk band Scritti Politti, emblematic of the international perception of Bologna as the epicenter of political agitation and cultural innovation. Historic spaces covered include Traumfabrik, Cassero, neon, Link Project, and Il Campo delle Fragole. The project was the winner of the eleventh edition of the Italian Council (2022) call for proposals issued by the General Directorate for Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture.
