Qualitatssicherung und -entwicklung (QS/QE) in der Wissenschaft sind seit langem ein Forschungsthema. Daher sind samtliche QS/QE-Instrumente auch schon vielfach untersucht worden. Nur eines nicht: Wissenschaftliche Beirate, also Gremien, in denen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler ihresgleichen in wissenschaftlichen Angelegenheiten beraten. Diese Beirate genieen eine positive Bewertung, obwohl bisher niemand wusste, wie gut sie tatsachlich funktionieren. Erstmals werden hier nun die Beirate im deutschen Wissenschaftssystem systematisch analysiert. Dazu wurde ermittelt, wie verbreitet Wissenschaftliche Beirate sind und wie viele es insgesamt gibt, welche offiziellen und inoffiziellen Funktionen sie wahrnehmen, wie sie zusammengesetzt sind und welche Kosten sie verursachen. Der entstehende Ressourcenverbrauch Zeit und Geld wird den Effekten der Beiratsarbeit gegenubergestellt.
