Within the European and Asian context scientists from nine different countries are concerned with political and social interactional structures between schools as public institutions and the local political actors which influence the school environment. The contributions give answers to questions regarding the cooperation between school administrations and community, to civic education for sustainable development at the interface between school and community, to teachers as moderators for political and democratic educational processes and to models for successful cooperation between schools and local political actors.

Im Rahmen einer weltweit angelegten Expertenbefragung und bezogen auf die von der UNESCO etablierten fünf Weltregionen hat diese Studie die Konzepte einer Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung aus politikdidaktischer Perspektive sowie deren praktische Umsetzung vor dem Hintergrund von länderspezifischen Bildungsinstitutionen analysiert. Es wird die Frage beantwortet, inwieweit der Dekadenprozess auf internationaler und nationalstaatlicher Ebene sowie in zivilgesellschaftlichen Kontexten als bildungspolitisches Demokratisierungsprojekt im Sinne einer „Global- und Good Governance“ verstanden werden kann. Die Autoren kommen u.a. zu dem Ergebnis, dass erst die dauerhafte Etablierung demokratischer Bildungsstrukturen, die gleichermaßen aus staatlich unterstützten Top-down- und zivilgesellschaftlich fundierten Bottom-up-Prozessen erwachsen müssen, auf längere Sicht erwarten lassen, dass sich die Leitideen einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung im Handeln von Regierungen und Bürgern widerspiegeln.p>
