Generalized estimating equations have become increasingly popular in biometrical, econometrical, and psychometrical applications because they overcome the classical assumptions of statistics, i.e. independence and normality, which are too restrictive for many problems.

Therefore, the main goal of this book is to give a systematic presentation of the original generalized estimating equations (GEE) and some of its further developments. Subsequently, the emphasis is put on the unification of various GEE approaches. This is done by the use of two different estimation techniques, the pseudo maximum likelihood (PML) method and the generalized method of moments (GMM).

The author details the statistical foundation of the GEE approach using more general estimation techniques. The book could therefore be used as basis for a course to graduate students in statistics, biostatistics, or econometrics, and will be useful to practitioners in the same fields.

After studying statistics and mathematics at the University of Munich and obtaining his doctoral degree from the University of Dortmund, Andreas Ziegler received the Johann-Peter-Süssmilch-Medal of the German Association for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology for his post-doctoral work on “Model Free Linkage Analysis of Quantitative Traits” in 1999. In 2004, he was one of the recipients of the Fritz-Linder-Forum-Award from the German Association for Surgery.

Ein wichtiges Ziel ökologischer Modernisierung ist die Verbindung umweltfreundlichen Wirtschaftens mit einer Verbesserung der Wettbewerbsfähigkeit. Zentrale Instrumente in diesem Kontext sind Standards für Umweltmanagementsysteme, wie beispielsweise das EG-Öko-Audit (EMAS). Während das Kosten-Nutzen-Verhältnis von EMAS bereits erforscht wurde, sind die Innovations- und Wettbewerbswirkungen bislang noch nicht systematisch untersucht worden. Diese Forschungslücke wird in dieser Studie mit Tiefenfallstudien und einer telefonischen Breitenbefragung geschlossen.

Aus der Studie des ZEW und des IÖW lässt sich für Unternehmen die Handlungsempfehlung ableiten, durch Verzahnung von Umwelt- und Innovationsmanagement ihre Wettbewerbsfähigkeit zu stärken. Entscheidend ist die F&E-Abteilung, die an der Weiterentwicklung von EMAS beteiligt werden sollte, um eine stärkere Verknüpfung zu produktbezogenen und strategischen Fragestellungen zu erreichen.
