Andrew Johnston examines EC regulation of national corporate governance systems through the lenses of economic theory and reflexive governance. By contrasting the normative demands of the neoclassical 'agency' model with those of the productive coalition model, he shows how their incompatibility required political compromise. Reflexive governance theory is then used to explain how progress has been possible. Through detailed analysis of both case law and positive regulation, the author highlights the move from positive to negative integration; the benefits as well as the limits of regulatory competition; and the significant role of reflexive techniques in both preventing market failure and enabling positive integration to proceed. The workable compromise that has emerged between market integration and continued regulatory diversity at national level demonstrates that procedural regulation can steer autonomous social subsystems towards greater responsibility and a better articulation of the public good.

Managing a software development project is a complex process. There are lots of deliverables to produce, standards and procedures to observe, plans and budgets to meet, and different people to manage. Project management doesn't just start and end with designing and building the system. Once you've specified, designed and built (or bought) the system it still needs to be properly tested, documented and settled into the live environment. This can seem like a maze to the inexperienced project manager, or even to the experienced project manager unused to a particular environment.A Hacker's Guide to Project Management acts as a guide through this maze. It's aimed specifically at those managing a project or leading a team for the first time, but it will also help more experienced managers who are either new to software development, or dealing with a new part of the software life-cycle. This book:describes the process of software development, how projects can fail and how to avoid those failures outlines the key skills of a good project manager, and provides practical advice on how to gain and deploy those skills takes the reader step-by-step through the main stages of the project, explaining what must be done, and what must be avoided at each stage suggests what to do if things start to go wrong! The book will also be useful to designers and architects, describing important design techniques, and discussing the important discipline of Software Architecture. This new edition: has been fully revised and updated to reflect current best practices in software development includes a range of different life-cycle models and new design techniques now uses the Unified Modelling Language throughout

Exploring the process of university collaboration from the perspective of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), this book offers an in-depth examination of the collaboration process, dispelling the myth of the disengagement of these firms. Andrew Johnston and Robert Huggins present a thorough account of how SMEs can “unlock the ivory tower” and gain access to university knowledge to support their own innovation.Outlining and discussing the intellectual roots of research in this field in an accessible way, the book focuses on SMEs to provide insight to an often overlooked group of firms. Chapters show how the closeness of the partners in terms of network membership, working culture and practice, and technical language drive the formation and function of these collaborative links, offering a holistic account of this from idea generation to the completion of projects. This will be an essential read for academics researching innovation and the role of universities, as well as knowledge exchange practitioners wishing to further their understanding of collaboration processes. Policymakers seeking to explore how and why SMEs engage in open innovation practices will also find this an invigorating book.

The book investigates the intricate world of entrepreneurship, examining its dual nature as a force for constructive societal change as well as a potential source of destructive consequences. To examine these two facets in detail, the book scrutinizes the interplay between individual actions and institutional frameworks, showing how entrepreneurship can drive economic and social progress or hinder it through rent-seeking behaviors and exploitation of institutional gaps. By analyzing various settings, from capitalist to state-controlled economies, the book highlights the role of the 'rules of the game' in determining whether entrepreneurial activities contribute positively to society or perpetuate inequality and inefficiency. As such, in the context of emerging markets, this book addresses the question of when are entrepreneurial activities constructive and when are they destructive?Through a nuanced examination of diverse economic settings and institutional environments, the book illuminates how entrepreneurship can foster innovation and social value while also perpetuating corruption and inefficiency. By integrating theoretical frameworks with empirical evidence, it provides a comprehensive analysis of the factors influencing both productive and destructive entrepreneurial behaviors. The aim is to deepen readers' understanding of how entrepreneurship interacts with various contexts and to advocate for ethical and socially responsible practices, ultimately inviting contemplation on the challenges and opportunities that arise in the evolving landscape of entrepreneurship. As such, this book is a valuable resource for scholars studying these phenomena but also practitioners, and policymakers alike.

The compelling story of the end of Henry VIII’s reign—and how the fate of England was determined by the king’s secretary and minister, William PagetIn the closing years of Henry VIII’s reign, the future of England hung in the balance. The king’s potential heirs consisted of two daughters of disgraced parentage and a young son too inexperienced to rule. With a French invasion imminent and the royal dynasty in crisis, England’s noble families vied to manipulate the succession for their own ends.In this dramatic account, Andrew Johnston shows how one vital member of Henry VIII’s court attempted to protect the future of the kingdom, and himself. Of humble origins, William Paget was the successor of Thomas Cromwell as Henry VIII’s trusted secretary. He became the king’s closest confidant in the chaotic final years of his reign, oversaw the crisis of Tudor succession, and navigated the deadly conflicts of the Henrician court—cutting down to size the powerful Howard family, as well as heading off the French across the Channel. This is an engrossing story of rivalry and intrigue, of politics and the uncertainties of Tudor statecraft, through the eyes of one of Henry VIII’s most powerful and most overlooked courtiers.
