Mediterranean studies flourish in literary and cultural studies, but concepts of the Mediterranean and the theories and methods they use are very disparate. This is because the Mediterranean is not a simple geographical or historical unity, but a multiplicity, a network of highly interconnected elements, each of which is different and individual. Talking about Mediterranean literature raises the question of whether the connectivity of Mediterranean literature can or should be limited in some way by constructing an inside and an outside of the Mediterranean. What kind of connectivity and fragmentation do literary texts produce, how do they build and interrupt references (to the real, to fictional forms of representation, to history, but also to other texts and discourses), how do they create and deny communication, and how do they engage with and reflect literary and non-literary concepts of the Mediterranean? The volume explores the ways in which the lottery was imagined in early modern and long eighteenth-century Europe. It presents a series of interconnected case studies from Denmark-Norway, the German-speaking areas, Britain, the Low Countries, France, Italy, and Spain, which bring into dialogue a wide range of materials: lottery tickets and advertisements, pamphlets and periodicals, visual art, popular songs, poetry, prose fiction and plays, political, moral, and judicial treatises.This material suggests how lotteries were perceived as inviting fantasies, dreams, and daydreams; as engendering folly, superstition, and compulsive playing; as leading to social misery, bankruptcy, and suicide; as betraying questions of risk, trust, and fairness; and as being deeply embedded in the political and fi nancial development of an emerging modernity.

Was ein Kultfilm ist, zumal ein Science-Fiction-Kultfilm, daruber ist eine verbindliche Einigung schwer herzustellen. Viele Faktoren konnen einen Film zum Kultfilm machen, erstaunlicherweise auch eher negative Dinge, billige Produktion, schlechte Qualitat, lacherliche Spezialeffekte, trashige Anmutung oder kommerzieller Misserfolg. Aber naturlich spielen auch noch andere Eigenschaften eine Rolle, namlich, ob ein Film als bahnbrechend und stilpragend empfunden wird, ob er asthetisch innovativ ist, ob er die Epoche seiner Entstehungszeit beispielhaft widerspiegelt oder ob er selbstreflexiv mit den Genrekonventionen spielt.
