Als 1506 in Rom eine Statuengruppe entdeckt wurde, die einen Mann und zwei Knaben in der Umschlingung zweier Schlangen zeigte, fiel die Betitelung des Kunstwerks nicht schwer: Die Laokoonepisode war durch Vergil gut bekannt, die Existenz einer Statuengruppe dieses Themas durch den älteren Plinius bezeugt. Alsbald brach eine nur im kulturellen Kontext jener Jahre verständliche Erregung aus. Man pilgerte zum Fundort, kommentierte und bedichtete den Fund, um den viele Käufer konkurrierten, bis ihn Papst Julius II. für sich beanspruchte. Seit dem Juni 1506 bildet er eines der Prunkstücke der päpstlichen Kunstsammlungen.Der Tagungsband ist dem Laokoon-Thema in Literatur, bildender Kunst und Musik gewidmet. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt in der Stoffentfaltung und Wertung von Schuld und Verstrickung in den literarischen Gestaltungen der Antike (Arktinos; Sophokles, Vergil, Quintus Smyrnaeus, Dracontius), in Mittelalter und Renaissance (Trojaliteratur, Sadoleto) und in Berlioz’ Oper Les Troyens. Ein zweites zentrales Themenfeld bilden Rang und (Wirkungs-)Geschichte der Statuengruppe ‑ Schwerpunkte sind hier Ikonographie und Datierung, der Plinius-Kommentar, die Rezeption der Gruppe in medizinischen Handschriften, bei Primaticcio und bei Winckelmann.

Thema dieses Buches ist weder die Philosophie der Zeit noch eine römische Chronologie, sondern eine Untersuchung der literarischen Reflexion der Zeitordnung in Rom. Es sagt wenig darüber, „wie es wirklich gewesen“, und mehr darüber, wie diese Ordnung sprachlich konstituiert wurde, welche Metaphern sie hervorbrachte und welche Argumente im römischen Zeitdiskurs präsent waren. Wichtigstes Ziel ist die interpretatorische Erschließung der relevanten Texte und, daran anknüpfend, die Rekonstruktion des kulturellen Wissens in Bezug auf das tempus Romanum. Dieses Wissen konkretisiert sich in der Darstellung der beiden Organisationsinstrumente der Zeit, Kalender und Uhr; es wird in die Kulturentstehungslehren integriert, der Kulturkritik unterworfen, für das Selbstbild Roms in Anschlag gebracht und in einem aemulatio-Verhältnis zu Griechenland und Ägypten gesehen. Interpretiert werden Texte von Plautus, Lukrez, Varro, Cicero, Caesar, Vitruv, Vergil, Livius, Ovid, Pomponius Mela, Plinius d.Ä., Sueton, Censorinus und Macrobius; ergänzend herangezogen werden motivisch relevante Passagen bei Hesiod, (Ps.-)Aischylos, Xenophon, Hekataios, Geminos, Plutarch, Iambulos, Lukian und Alkiphron.

It does so from the perspectives of book history, literary history, especially emblem scholarship, and art history. The various contributions to the volume address issues such as those of the adoption of printer''s devices in the place of the older heraldic printer''s marks as a symptom of the changing self-image of the representatives of the Early Modern printing profession, of the mutual influence of emblems and printer''s marks, of the place of Classical learning in the design of Humanist printer''s marks, of the economic factors involved in the evolution of Early Modern printer''s marks, the pictorial topics of the Early Modern printer''s mark, and the printer''s mark as a result of the ''Verbürgerlichung'' of the device of Early Modern nobility. Special care was taken to account for the similarities and differences of the printer''s marks produced and used in different regional and cultural contexts. The printer’s mark thus becomes visible as a European phenomenon that invites studying some of the most significant shared aspects of Early Modern culture.
