En 1812, Napoléon est à la tête de la plus grosse armée qu’il ait jamais rassemblée. Il ouvre les hostilités contre le tsar Alexandre Ier, avec qui il a pourtant conclu une alliance. Même la retraite, loin de l’anéantir, a révélé son exceptionnelle aptitude à tirer parti de l’adversité. In "Venedig unter vier Augen" unternimmt Anka Muhlstein einen Streifzug durch die Serenissima, während Louis Begley dem genius loci dieses einzigartigen Orts der Weltliteratur bei Henry James, Marcel Proust und Thomas Mann nachspürt und in einer meisterhaften Erzählung von einer erotischen Initiation und dem einzigen Weg nach Venedig erzählt: "Fährst du nach Venedig, musst du in einer Gondel ankommen, sagte Lilly, das ist das einzig Wahre. Alles andere wäre ein Sakrileg. Eine Gondelfahrt vom Bahnhof zu deinem Hotel, damit tust du der Stadt und dir Genüge, meine ich. Ich sollte dir dazu sagen, dass eine Autorität wie Thomas Mann anderer Meinung ist. Jedenfalls war er anderer Meinung, als er den "Tod in Venedig" schrieb. Dort steht, dass auf dem Bahnhof in Venedig ankommen einen Palast durch die Hintertür betreten hieße."
