In 1983 The Economics of Health in Devloping Countries was published. This was a basic text, designed to illuminate ways in which economic concepts and techniques can be applied to health and health services, each chapter eviewing `the state of the art' in a particular area. Since 1983, there has been a rapidly growing interest in this field. One striking feature has been considerably increased research effort, providing the basis for this publication which presents a number of empirical studies in order both to clarify research methodologies and report research results that are of key importance to policy-makers. Those economists most active in researching the health sector in developing countries were invited to contribute chapters: all have direct experience of working in developing countries, whether for governments, educational institutions, or international agencies. This book will be of use to all those interested (as policy-makers, managers, academics, and students) in economic issues concerning the health sector, and in the application of the concepts and techniques of health economics to improve the efficiency and equity of resource use in the devloping world. - Inbunden, Engelska, 2007

Now, as when this book was originally published in 1982, health services have shown themselves only too capable of absorbing a large share of the resources that nations have available for public and private expenditure. Then, as now, as nations are faced with problems of slow or negative economic growth, government resources are increasingly directed towards setting limits on the resources absorbed by the health sector. Looking especially at the UK and USA, the book explores the challenges that countries face in attempting to improve the health and well-being of their communities through conscious planning of health-related activities. It is argued that there is often a huge credibility gap between the rhetoric of comprehensive planning and the reality of health policy-making and planning in many societies. The book identifies feasible approaches that can be made to improve decision-making in the health sector.

New ideas on the role of the state in developing countries have considerable implications for the social sectors, especially health. Certain international organizations have advocated a larger role for private sector health care providers and many developing country governments have adopted this approach. Yet, until now, very little evidence has existed about how shifting the balance between public and private roles might affect equity, and the quality and efficiency of health care. This book presents the results from a coordinated programme of research on the private health care sector including studies carried out by Asian, African and Latin American researchers. The conceptual chapters draw upon both industrialized and developing country literature to describe the intellectual terrain, analyse the key issues and summarize experience to date. This book will help increase understanding of the private sector, as well as illustrating the contentious issues involved in privatization. It will be useful to students and academics involved in international public health courses, and to health policy makers in developing countries.
