A comprehensive study of the nexus between democratization and security in the Mediterranean, which are seen as essentially complementary yet threatened by political trends witnessed since the September 2001 attacks. Contributors from a variety of European and Mediterranean countries address the impact of a restructured security system, Europe's effort to establish an autonomous security and defence policy, and attempts among the Mediterranean Partner Countries (MPCs) to build regional security regimes.

The ’Arab Spring’ triggered paradigmatic shifts but, despite these changes, much in the Euro-Mediterranean region remains the same. Utilising ’Logics of Action’, an innovative theoretical framework designed to capture the complexity of political interaction in one of the fastest changing regions in the world, this book discusses developments in the region before and after the Arab Spring that can be characterised by a continuation of the norm. Expert contributors identify patterns of interaction between governmental institutions, economic entrepreneurs, religious groups and other diverse actors that withstood these historical changes and explore why these relationships have proved so robust. Dieser Band befasst sich mit den derzeit beobachtbaren tiefgreifenden sozialen, ökonomischen und politischen Transformationen in der arabischen Welt, die jedoch auf der Ebene der politischen Systeme von Stagnation und Autoritarismus gekennzeichnet sind. Ziel der Beiträge ist es, innovative theoretische Ansätze aus den Politik- bzw. den Sozialwissenschaften mit konkreter empirischer Forschung zu außenpolitischen, wirtschaftlichen und gesellschaftspolitischen Entwicklungen in der Region zu verknüpfen. Drei Faktoren spielen dabei eine zentrale Rolle: innergesellschaftliche Transformationsprozesse, externe Einflussnahmen (insbesondere Demokratieförderung) und die Rolle von ökonomischen und politischen Renten. Das Buch erscheint als Band 1 der Reihe „Politik und Gesellschaft des Nahen Ostens“.

Seit Dezember 2010 haben die Arabellions Nordafrika und die gesamte Region des Nahen und Mittleren Ostens erfasst.

​Eine Machtübernahme islamistischer Parteien in arabischen Staaten befürchten vor allem säkular orientierte Frauen, von denen sich viele als Verliererinnen der „Arabellions“ empfinden. Annette Jünemann geht der Frage nach, welchen Beitrag die Europäische Union zur Förderung von Geschlechterdemokratie in den arabischen Transformationsländern leisten kann. Bislang hat die EU im Rahmen ihrer externen Demokratieförderung im südlichen Mittelmeerraum die Agenda säkularer Frauenrechtsgruppen unterstützt. Dies geschah im stillen Einvernehmen mit den autoritären arabischen Regimen, die in einem säkularen Staatsfeminismus ein probates Mittel im Kampf gegen den politischen Islam sahen. Seit dem Arabischen Frühling ist die bisherige Förderpraxis der EU diskreditiert und verlangt eine Anpassung an die neuen politischen Realitäten.

​Der Arabische Frühling wird häufig als Zäsur nicht nur für die Region, sondern auch für die euro-mediterranen Beziehungen wahrgenommen, nach der sich vermeintlich „alles“ änderte. Annette Jünemann und Julia Simon stellen diese Annahme in Zweifel und untersuchen, welche zentralen Determinanten die Mittelmeerpolitik der Europäischen Union (EU) seit den 1990er Jahren bestimmten. Von diesen Determinanten leiten die Autorinnen Erklärungsansätze für das normative wie realpolitische Versagen der EU ab. In einem zweiten Schritt analysieren sie die Reaktionen der EU auf die Umbrüche in ihrer Nachbarschaft. Ausgehend vom Logics of Action-Ansatz identifizieren sie sowohl Wandel als auch Persistenz in den Handlungslogiken der EU-Mittelmeerpolitik und messen darüber die Lernfähigkeit der EU in unterschiedlichen Bereichen ihrer Regionalpolitik. Ein grundlegender Paradigmenwechsel ist noch nicht erkennbar.​

An unprecedented number of people is currently on the move seeking refuge in Europe. Large parts of European societies respond with anxiety and mistrust to the influx of people. Nationalist, anti-migrant parties from Slovakia over Germany to the UK have gained increasing support among the electorate and challenge the political mainstream. Europe is struggling how to respond. While the search for solutions is ongoing one pattern seems to be emerging: Fortress Europe is in the making. Unfortunately, few of these discussions and measures consider the structural root causes and dynamics of migration, the motives of migrants or societal challenges more thoroughly. This book seeks to address this deficit. Taking migration and asylum policies as a starting point, it analyses the various dimensions underpinning migration. In doing so, it identifies why receiving countries are in many ways part of the problem. To eschew an overtly Euro-centric perspective and stimulate a debate between science and politics, it contains contributions by academics and practitioners alike from both shores of the Mediterranean.
