It is generally assumed that regional integration leads to stability and peace. This book is a systematic study of the impact of European integration on the transformation of border conflicts. It provides a theoretical framework centred on four 'pathways' of impact and applies them to five cases of border conflicts: Cyprus, Ireland, Greece/Turkey, Israel/Palestine and various conflicts on Russia's border with the EU. The contributors suggest that integration and association provide the EU with potentially powerful means to influence border conflicts, but that the EU must constantly re-adjust its policies depending on the dynamics of each conflict. Their findings reveal the conditions upon which the impact of integration rests and challenge the widespread notion that integration is necessarily good for peace. This book will appeal to scholars and students of international relations, European politics, and security studies studying European integration and conflict analysis.

This volume shows how historical trajectories have shaped international affairs covering a wide range of imperial and (post-) colonial settings in international politics, substantiating the claim that imperial and colonial legacies - and how they have transformed over time - are foundational to the historicity of international politics. It contributes to debates on the role of history in International Relations (IR) by combining theoretical arguments on the role of history through the concept of 'historicity' with concrete empirical analyses on a wide range of imperial and colonial legacies. This book makes a novel contribution to the literature by examining the intersection of social media, conflict and peacebuilding. It challenges traditional state-centric and Eurocentric approaches to international relations and peace and conflict studies by examining the role of social media in peacebuilding beyond a simplistic tech-solutionist versus tech-skeptical duality. The book explains why the impact of social media on peacebuilding is complex and depends on the political context and strategies of the actors involved in it. Dieser Band befasst sich mit den derzeit beobachtbaren tiefgreifenden sozialen, ökonomischen und politischen Transformationen in der arabischen Welt, die jedoch auf der Ebene der politischen Systeme von Stagnation und Autoritarismus gekennzeichnet sind. Ziel der Beiträge ist es, innovative theoretische Ansätze aus den Politik- bzw. den Sozialwissenschaften mit konkreter empirischer Forschung zu außenpolitischen, wirtschaftlichen und gesellschaftspolitischen Entwicklungen in der Region zu verknüpfen. Drei Faktoren spielen dabei eine zentrale Rolle: innergesellschaftliche Transformationsprozesse, externe Einflussnahmen (insbesondere Demokratieförderung) und die Rolle von ökonomischen und politischen Renten.
