This book informs about culture and the ways of thinking in Europe in the late Middle Ages. The concept of culture follows the intention of Pragmatic Philosophy (from W. James to R. Rorty). Special areas of study are: social dynamics, forms of government, religious teachings, moral intentions, philosophical doctrines, exchange with Jews and the Islamic culture, consecution of the »heretics«, development of natural science, literature, poetry, architecture and painting.Altogether the book intends to show the various forms of life and the worlds of ideas of the era; it builds a strong bridge for a better understanding of our cultural memory in modern times.

Schließlich gibt Grabner-Haider einen Überblick über das Literaturschaffen in allen Ländern Europas, über die Formen der Malerei, über die Musik, über die Baukunst und die Architektur. Denn in der Kunst spiegeln sich immer konkrete Lebenserfahrungen, aber auch philosophische Ideen. Davidowicz und Prenner legen die jüdische Lebenswelt und die islamische Kultur übersichtlich und umfassend dar.

The authors provide a broad overview of the culture and world of the Late Middle Ages (1200-1500 AD) throughout all of Europe. To this end they lean on the pragmatic philosophy of W. James to R. Rorty, who provide many models and interpretations in the context of concrete "ways of life" and "living environment."Grabner-Haider introduces the reader to the world and social processes of this era, including matters of trade relations, worklife, economics and the gender relationships of that time. Besides the political developments in Middle Europe, in England and France as well as in Northern, Southern and Eastern Europe, he also takes a closer look at the religious beliefs of the day, the lives of the mendicant orders, clerical power, the teachings of the Church Councils and the religious beliefs of the day.On the other hand, we also learn about the teachings of the theologians and philosophers at the universities, the concepts of the humanists and the renaissance of ancient thought. Grabner-Haider describes the conflicts between Jews, Christians and Moslems, the development of the natural sciences, medicine, mathematics and astronomy.The volume deals extensively with life under Byzantine rule, the expansion the Ottoman Empire, the role of the Greek-Orthodox Church in Southern Italy and the developments occurring in Russia of that day. It recalls the dark sides of Christianity, the persecution of the "heretics," the many forms of inquisition and the resistance to church reform.Johann Maier is concerned with the culture and world of the Jews in Europe and in the Islamic countries, their religious and cult teachings and theological tenets. Karl Prenner looks at the culture and life of the Moslems in the Arab and Persian worlds, their exchange with the Jews and Chrisians in Spain, their theological and philosophical teachings, the schools of laws as well as the forms of rule they established. There is also an informative timeline, a list of important secondary literature as well as a person index at the end of the volume.

Anton Grabner-Haider, Karl Prenner, and Klaus S. Davidowicz present the cultural history of Europe in an extensive and consistent manner. The view of cultural anthropology and of the pragmatical philosophy is chosen. The complex network of the way of life, the world of existence and the interpretation of existence in Europe in the times between 1500 and 1800 will be sharply described. The authors deal with the economical, the technical and social developments, the evolution of natural sciences and the beginning of humanistic and democratic thinking. They focus on the developments in the field of religion (reformation), on the impulses of critical philosophy (enlightenment) and on the political consequences (revolutions). The organization of reign is clearly transformed. Special interest is given to the works of literature and poetry, to the development of painting and architecture and last but not least to the oevres of musical composition in this periode. Two sections of the book focus the Jewish and the Islamic culture in Europe. The intention is to choose some new models of interpretation of this periode, so that false interpretations can be released.
