On 11 September 1973 General Augusto Pinochet led a military coup against the elected government of Salvador Allende, bombing La Moneda, the presidential seat in Chile''s capital Santiago where the President died resisting the attack.

The National Football Stadium became a torture centre, where supporters of Allende''s Popular Unity government were rounded up, tortured, and - like the popular singer Victor Jara - brutally killed. Chile''s Nobel-prize winning poet Pablo Neruda also died in mysterious circumstances immediately following the coup.

Thousands of Chileans disappeared, now known to have been murdered, and many others went into exile, including the writer Antonio Skármeta, who was completing his first novel I Dreamt the Snow was Burning, set in the weeks just before the coup, where football, Neruda''s poetry, the growing tensions of the period clash around the inhabitants of a cheap Santiago boarding house, from petty crooks to fervent supporters of Popular Unity. Into their midst comes a football-mad country boy longing only to be a massive star - and of course to score with the girls.

Before publishing his much acclaimed novels I Dreamt the Snow was Burning and Burning Patience, Antonio Skármeta was best known in Latin America for his masterful short stories, which won the prestigious Casa de las Américas Prize.

This Readers International collection first marked the return of Antonio Skármeta from exile and now marks the memory of 50 years since the coup that brought General Pinochet to power, toppling the elected government of Chile and bringing a stark choice of death or exile to so many Chileans.

These virtuoso stories of passion and politics, hope and disillusionment in the New World, range from the Conquistadors to the present day and from Santiago to New York and California. 

This book presents applications of innovative techniques for studying and solving complex problems in artificial intelligence and computing. This edition brings together experience, current work, and promising future trends related to distributed computing, artificial intelligence, and their applications to provide efficient solutions to real-world problems. Given the conference''s success, this edition features twelve special sessions covering a wide range of topics related to AI and other areas of interest. These sessions were carefully curated to address the latest advancements and challenges in fields such as machine learning, neural networks, IoT, big data, and blockchain, among others. The accepted papers from these sessions are presented in two volumes, showcasing the diverse and innovative research being conducted in these domains.
