Gender relations are in a period of transition. In this collection, some of Australia''s leading writers and talented young scholars offer a systematic overview of the ways in which recent feminist analysis is shaping women''s studies. They reflect on questions of power, difference, social structures, methodology and culture. They ask how feminism has changed in the past few years, and whether concepts like ''patriarchy'' and ''oppression'' are still relevant.Contributors include: Ien Ang, Julie Ewington, Jill Matthews, Susan Sheridan, Sophie Watson and Anna Yeatman.''All the liveliest feminist debates - postmodernist, deconstructionist, post-Marxist - are represented here. The scope is broad and the subject matter multidisciplinary. This book is new Australian feminism at its newest and best.'' - Michele Barrett, Professor of Sociology, City University, London

First published in 1988, Crossing Boundaries challenges existing disciplines and fields of study from a feminist perspective, contesting their presumptions, and questioning and crossing their boundaries.
The book provides a broad-ranging overview of the state of feminist interventions in the social and natural sciences and the humanities. It illustrates something of the diversity of approaches to theory and scholarship which is evident in the work of feminists. It analyses crucial problems in the way traditional knowledges are conceived, and poses exciting new alternatives.
Here is a lively display of the vigour of feminist investigations, from mathematics to literary criticism, from biology to socialism, from equal pay to polyandry. This book will introduce the reader to the work of feminist thinkers and will be a valuable text for students and teachers of sociology and women’s studies.

Looking at the complex relationship between the discipline of history and the writing of lives, this key textbook provides an original and insightful introduction to a growing and increasingly important area of historical scholarship and research. Examining key works that have changed the nature of biography, Barbara Caine also explores the way biographical narrative and life stories have become a central preoccupation for history.
Outlining the main features of contemporary historical biography, this is an ideal companion for undergraduate and postgraduate students taking courses on Historiography, Theory and History, Theory and Methods, Historical Methodology, History and Life/Biographical/Autobiographical Writing, and Life-Writing courses on English or Creative Writing degrees.

There are now many studies of family letters in Europe, but most of them focus on marital letters and letters between parents, especially mothers, and their sons. Little attention has been paid to the letters to and from daughters. This volume seeks to begin filling that gap by exploring the continuities and changes evident in the letters written between mothers and daughters over several centuries. Some of these changes reflect the history of letters and the ways that they were written and delivered, especially the move from the use of scribes and couriers in the medieval and early modern period, which made both the writing and reading of letters a public affair, to the use of pens and the situation in which letters were able to be written in private and read only by the person to whom they were addressed. But the letters also reveal the changing nature of the mother and daughter relationship, as the formal and more distant ties evident in the early period, in which dynastic and other matters were often more important to a mother than her daughter’s personal happiness, were replaced by closer and more intimate ties and a concern with particular personalities and individual needs. This book was originally published as a special issue of Women’s History Review.

There has been an increasing interest in the meaning and importance of friendship in recent years, particularly in the West. However, the history of friendship, and the ways in which it has changed over time, have rarely been examined. Friendship: A History traces the development of friendship in Europe from the Hellenistic period to today. The book brings together a range of essays that examine the language of friendship and its significance in terms of ethics, social institutions, religious organizations and political alliances. The essays study the works of classical and contemporary authors to explore the role of friendship in Western philosophy. Ranging from renaissance friendships to Christian and secular friendships and from women’s writing to the role of class and sex in friendships, Friendship: A History will be invaluable to students and scholars of social history.
