Using original research and focusing on occupational ill-health in relation to women workers, this book presents a perspective for the analysis of both gender and work and work and ill-health. The author gives a critique of traditional theoretical accounts of gender relations, state intervention and industrial ill-health. The chapters examine the extent to which feminist activists got involved in debates about health and industrial work, and show how activists went beyond the concerns of suffrage.; The book presents a historical period which was marked by a change in the role of the state with respect to intervention in industrial conditions, and analyses the coincidence of this with three other significant developments: the growth of expertise in industrial disease; the employment of women in the factory to take on responsibilities in relation to other women; and changes in the direction of feminist activism. In light of this analysis, the author suggests that some theoretical approaches to both gender relations and health and safety requirements require modification.

Harrison's book is a valuable reference for developing collaborative programs between indigenous groups and outside experts. In it she outlines the process of program design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation, for formal or pilot programs. The rich case study materials provides details on collaborative programs in economic development, education, social services, and health. Her book will be an essential tool in anthropological practice and research methods, for courses in ethnographic methods, comparative indigenous studies, multicultural education, and Native American studies. First published Open Access under a Creative Commons license as What is Narrative Research?, this title is now also available as part of the Bloomsbury Research Methods series.Narrative research has become a catchword in the social sciences today, promising new fields of inquiry and creative solutions to persistent problems. This book brings together ideas about narrative from a variety of contexts across the social sciences and synthesizes understandings of the field. Rather than focusing on theory, it examines how narrative research is conducted and applied. It operates as a practical introductory guide, basic enough for first-time researchers, but also as a window onto the more complex questions and difficulties that all researchers in this area face. The authors guide readers through current debates about how to obtain and analyse narrative data, about the nature of narrative, the place of the researcher, the limits of researcher interpretations, and the significance of narrative work in applied and in broader political contexts. This new edition includes updated references and a greater focus on digitality throughout. It addresses social justice and decoloniality more explicitly, centrally and consistently, drawing on examples around Black Lives Matter, #MeToo, climate change and Extinction Rebellion, and Covid and pandemic narratives.

Life Story Research gathers together articles on a number of methodological approaches within the social sciences that focus on research where the individual and his or her life, experiences and thinking is the core focus of study. The personal narrative can be teased out in many ways using methods such as the auto/biographical or oral history, and even the psychoanalytical. This four volume set cover an extensive time period, with classic pieces providing an important context for much of the later work. This set will be invaluable to researchers within the social sciences and related research fields (nursing, criminology, cultural studies). With many ′new′ approaches available, individual researchers are offered access to material that addresses both the ′how to′ as well as a critical evaluation of issues associated with them.Part I: Historical Origins & TrajectoriesPart II: Theoretical & Conceptual Issues in Life Story ResearchPart III: Types of Life Story Research: Traditional and New Sources of Life Story DataPart IV: Doing Life Story ResearchPart V: Research Contexts and Life Stories
