What is intuition? What constitutes an intuitive process? Why are intuition concepts important? After many years of scholarly neglect, interest in intuition is now exploding in psychology and cognitive science. Moreover, intuition is also enjoying a renaissance in philosophy. Yet no single definition of intuition appears in contemporary scholarship; there is no consensus on the meaning of this concept in any discipline. Rational Intuition focuses on conceptions of intuition in relation to rational processes. Covering a broad range of historical and contemporary contexts, prominent philosophers, psychologists, and cognitive scientists explore how intuition is implicated in rational activity in its diverse forms. In bringing the philosophical history of intuition into novel dialogue with contemporary philosophical and empirical research, Lisa M. Osbeck and Barbara S. Held invite a comparison of the conceptions and functions of intuition, thereby clarifying and advancing conceptual analysis across disciplines.

In this book, prominent writers on psychotherapy present different, sometimes opposing views on humanity amp rsquo s dark side and consider how these views impact their clinical practice. Must therapists address the dark side in order to help people grow constructively? Or can they work to develop clients amp rsquo positive features without addressing the dark side at all? How does one help a victim of amp ldquo evil amp rdquo cope in therapy, and what if the client is a perpetrator?Additional chapters address broader implications, such as whether psychology is a fundamentally moral enterprise, whether human negativity is necessarily immoral, and how organizations that strive for virtue might instead perpetuate vice. Complete with engaging case studies, this book will stimulate dialogue on important philosophical issues that impact clinical practice and broader social interactions.

This work provides an analysis of postmodern/narrative theory, with its underlying antirealist/constructivist philosophy that the subject makes rather than discovers reality. The author sees the ascent of this theory as a misguided attempt to solve a recalcitrant problem within psychotherapy: how to achieve a theory that attends to the uniqueness of each client and yet preserves a systematic, replicable enterprise. As an alternative she introduces readers to the integrative/eclectic therapy movement and proposes a "modest realism".
