Monetisation and Commercialisation in the Baltic Sea, 1050–1450 explores the varied uses of silver and gold in the Baltic Sea zone during the medieval period. Ten original contributions examine coins and currencies, trade, economy, and power, taking care to avoid an out-of-date approach to economic history which assumes a progression from ‘primitive’ forms to ‘developed’ structures. Exploring the formation of networks across late medieval Central Europe, this book examines the complex interaction of merchants, students, artists, and diplomats in a web of connections that linked the region. These individuals were friends in business ventures, occasionally families, and not infrequently foes. No single activity linked them, but rather their interconnectivity through matrices based in diverse modalities was key. Partnerships were not always friendship networks, art was sometimes passed between enemies, and families created for financial gain. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the chapters focus on inclusion and exclusion within intercultural networks, both interpersonal and artistic, using a wide spectrum of source materials and methodological approaches. The concept of friends is considered broadly, not only as connections of mutual affection but also simply through business relationships. Families are considered in terms of how they helped or hindered local integration for foreigners and the matrimonial strategies they pursued. Networks were also deeply impacted by rivalry and hostility.

The world of wealthy patricians intertwined with that of ordinary residents of Gdańsk. Sometimes conflicts and rivalries arose with close neighbours from Royal Prussia or distant ones from Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.Devoted to various aspects of maritime life – including navigation, shipbuilding, disasters, and pirate attacks – the chapters in this book discuss issues such as the import of multiple goods and luxury items. This book presents a comprehensive overview of women's activities in various spheres of life in medieval Poland and its neighbouring countries, seeking to move beyond the commonly accepted perspective of queens and higher nobility from the social elite to rural women, townswomen and poor noblewomen.The authors provide the broadest possible overview of these women's activities, encompassing their domestic, religious, economic, and cultural lives. Women are presented as active characters, not merely as objects of male actions. The limits of this activity were set by a system of norms and values and the resulting power relations within and outside the family. A fundamental problem in the study of women in the Middle Ages is the limited number and type of surviving sources, as well as their chronological and geographical distribution. Their voices are barely audible and almost always mediated. Despite these difficulties, the source material from the medieval period proves abundant enough to allow the contributors to take a broad look at the fate of women and their roles in many aspects and perspectives.This volume will appeal to students and scholars alike interested in the history of women and their significance in medieval society.

This study traces the chequered history of Peter von Danzig, a French caravel which was inadvertently taken over by Gdańsk (Danzig). Beata Możejko charts the fluctuating and often dramatic fortunes of the caravel, from her arrival in Gdańsk as a merchantman in 1462 to her demise near La Rochelle in 1475. The author examines the caravel’s role as a warship during the Anglo-Hanseatic conflict, and her most famous operation, when she was used by Gdańsk privateer Paul Beneke to capture a Burgundian galley with a rich cargo that included Hans Memling’s Last Judgement triptych.Using literary and archival sources, Możejko provides a comprehensive overview and analysis of the information available about the caravel and her colourful career.
