Die Aufklärung ist ein Zeitalter der globalen Expansion Europas; ihre Signatur ist die Reflexion des Anderen. Begegnungen zwischen Europäern und Nichteuropäern werden vielfach zum Gegenstand fiktionaler und faktualer Literatur. Der vorliegende Sammelband versteht sich als Begegnungsraum, der neue Perspektiven auf die Literatur des 18. Jahrhunderts eröffnet, indem er häufig ‚polar‘ Getrenntes reflexiv zusammenführt: den Blick von Europa auf die fremde Welt mit dem Blick der Fremden auf Europa; fiktionale mit faktualen Gattungen; literarische mit enzyklopädischen Schriften; Texte von Autorinnen und Autoren, die in ihrer Muttersprache schreiben, mit solchen, die sich des Französischen als Elitensprache bedienen.Le siècle des Lumières est une époque d’expansion européenne à l’échelle globale, marquée par la réflexion sur l’Autre. Les rencontres entre les Européens et les ‘autochtones’ extra-européens font souvent l’objet des textes et fictives et factuelles. Le présent recueil se veut un lieu de rencontre qui ouvre de nouvelles perspectives sur la littérature du XVIIIe siècle en réunissant ce qui est souvent séparé de manière antithétique, comme situé aux ‘antipodes’ : le regard de l’Europe sur le monde avec le regard des étrangers sur l’Europe ; les genres fictionnels avec les genres factuels, les textes littéraires avec les écrits encyclopédiques ; auteurs et autrices locuteurs natifs avec ceux qui utilisent le français en tant que langue de l’élite.

Nowadays the term ''globalization'' is used as a keyword to describe and to explain worldwide interchanges in the realms of economy, culture, world views etc which could have positive or negative effects. The origins of globalization are usually located in the 19th century because European politics (imperialism), economics and culture became dominant throughout the world during that century. However, there are important tendencies which allow us to trace the origins of globalization back to at least Early Modern Times or even to the Late Middle Ages. From this point of view literature is an important and promising object of research. It is true that in Renaissance Europe processes of cultural transfer are usually confined to exchanges between European nations and traditions. However, we have to take into account tendencies of globalization. The present study analyses these tendencies from a comparative perspective on the basis of dominant forms of discourse (e.g. Petrarchism), literary genres (for example the sonnet) and – last but not least – themes (for example the myth of Romeo and Juliet).

The aim of this book is to unite computer-aided lectures of literary texts with lectures that follow the philological-historical tradition: Both methods should be complementary. According to this aim, the analysis of the five-volume pastoral novel entitled L''Astrée (1607-1627) by Honoré d''Urfé will combine close and distant reading and employ the method of the so-called topic modeling. This book does not focus on quantitative results, but instead on researches in the field of literary interpretation.
