Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People was completed in 731 and still ranks among the most popular of history books. By the end of the eighth century, copies of it were to be found in many parts of England and on the Continent, some of which are still extant. If it were not for Bede's History we should know little about the Anglo-Saxon invasion and the beginnings of Christianity in England, and such familiar names as Edwin and Oswald, Cuthbert and Chad, Hilda and Caedmon would be almost forgotten. First published in 1969, Colgrave and Mynors's edition made use for the first time of the mid-eighth-century manuscript now in Leningrad, provided a survey of the extant manuscripts, and a new translation; it also brought up to date Plummer's invaluable edition. This revised edition takes into account J.M. Wallace-Hadrill's Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People: A Historical Commentary (Oxford Medieval Texts, 1988), enabling the reader to use the two in conjunction.

This volume contains the first English translation of Bede’s allegorical commentary on the tabernacle of Moses, which he interpreted as a symbolic figure of the Christian Church. Written in the early 720s at the monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow in Northumbria, On the Tabernacle (De tabernaculo) was the first Christian literary work devoted entirely to this topic and the first verse-by-verse commentary on the relevant portions of the Book of Exodus. On the Tabernacle was one of Bede’s most popular works, appearing in a great many manuscripts from every period of the Middle Ages.

Bede was born around 672 or 673 in lands most probably part of Monkwearmouth monastery, located in present-day Sunderland.
At the age of seven he was sent to Monkwearmouth monastery to be educated and later joined Abbot Ceolfrith at the Jarrow monastery. When plague struck in 686 both survived, most others died.
As a Benedictine monk Bede spent most of his life at the monastery though occasionally he travelled to other abbeys and monasteries, even visiting the archbishop of York and King Ceolwulf of Northumbria.
Bede is well known as an author, teacher and scholar. His most famous work is, The Ecclesiastical History of the English People, and over time this gained him the title ‘The Father of English History’. His ecumenical writings included a number of Biblical commentaries and other theological works of exegetical erudition. Another important area he studied was computes; the science of calculating calendar dates. Bede spent time, often mired in controversy, in trying to compute a date for Easter.
Bede also helped establish the practice of dating forward from the birth of Christ (Anno Domini – in the year of our Lord), a practice which is now the standard dating method.
He is considered by a multitude of historians to be the single most important scholar of antiquity for the period between the death of Pope Gregory I in 604 and the coronation of Charlemagne in 800.
Bede died on the Feast of the Ascension, Thursday, 26th May 735, on the floor of his cell at Jarrow.
