In our increasingly mobile world the ability to access information on demand at any time and place can satisfy people''s information needs as well as confer on them a competitive advantage. The emergence of battery-operated, low-cost and portable computers such as palmtops and PDAs, coupled with the availability and exploitation of wireless networks, have made possible the potential for ubiquitous computing. Through the wireless networks, portable equipments will become an integrated part of existing distributed computing environments, and mobile users can have access to data stored at information servers located at the static portion of the network even while they are on the move. Traditionally, information is retrieved following a request-response model. However, this model is no longer adequate in a wireless computing environment. First, the wireless channel is unreliable and the bandwidth is low compared to the wired counterpart. Second, the environment is essentially asymmetric with a large number of mobile users accessing a small number of servers. Third, battery-operated portable devices can typically operate only for a short time because of the short battery lifespan. Thus, clients are expected to be disconnected most of the time. To overcome these limitations, there has been a proliferation of research efforts on designing data delivery mechanisms to support wireless computing more effectively. Data Dissemination in Wireless Computing Environments focuses on such mechanisms. The purpose is to provide a thorough and comprehensive review of recent advances on energy-efficient data delivery protocols, efficient wireless channel bandwidth utilization, reliable broadcasting and cache invalidation strategies for clients with long disconnection time. Besides surveying existing methods, this book also compares and evaluates some of the more promising schemes.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) computing promises to o?er exciting new possibilities in d- tributed information processing and database technologies. The realization of this promise lies fundamentally in the availability of enhanced services such as structured ways for classifying and registering shared information, veri?cation and certi?cation of information, content-distributed schemes and quality of c- tent, security features, information discovery and accessibility, interoperation and composition of active information services, and ?nally market-based me- anisms to allow cooperative and non-cooperative information exchanges. The P2P paradigm lends itself to constructing large-scale complex, adaptive, - tonomous and heterogeneous database and information systems, endowed with clearly speci?ed and di?erential capabilities to negotiate, bargain, coordinate, and self-organize the information exchanges in large-scale networks. This vision will have a radical impact on the structure of complex organizations (business, scienti?c, or otherwise) and on the emergence and the formation of social c- munities, and on how the information is organized and processed. The P2P information paradigm naturally encompasses static and wireless connectivity, and static and mobile architectures. Wireless connectivity c- bined with the increasingly small and powerful mobile devices and sensors pose new challenges to as well as opportunities for the database community. Inf- mation becomes ubiquitous, highly distributed and accessible anywhere and at any time over highly dynamic, unstable networks with very severe constraints on the information management and processing capabilities.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we would like to welcome you to the proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Database Systems for - vanced Applications (DASFAA 2005). This conference provides an international forumfortechnicaldiscussionamongresearchers,developersandusersofdatabase systems from academia, business and industry. DASFAA focuses on research in databasetheory,andthedevelopmentandapplicationsofadvancedDBMSte- nologies. This was the second time that this conference has been held in China, the ?rst time was in Hong Kong in 2001. China is the third largest nation in terms of size, with the largest population in the world. The capital, Beijing, is a great metropolis, famous in Asia and throughout the world. We therefore were most privileged to host this conference in this renowned location. This volume contains papers selected for presentation and includes the three keynote talks, by Dr. Philip Yu, Prof. Elisa Bertino and Prof. Deyi Li. The conference also featured two tutorials: (1) Data Mining Techniques for MicroarrayDatasets,byLeiLiu,JiongYangandAnthonyTung,and(2)Pattern Management:Models,Languages,andArchitecturalIssues,byBarbaraCatania.ThetechnicalprogramoftheconferencewasselectedbyadistinguishedProgram Committee led by two PC Co-chairs, Lizhu Zhou and Beng Chin Ooi. The 89 members, half of whom reside outside Asia, made the committee a truly inter- tional one. They faced a di?cult task in selecting 67 regular papers and 15 short papersfrommanyverygoodcontributions.Thisyearthenumberofsubmissions, 302, was a record high for DASFAA conferences since the ?rst conference held in 1989 in Seoul, Korea. We wish to express our thanks to the Program Committee members, external reviewers, and all authors for submitting their papers to this conference.

This monograph describes methods for extending relational database systems for geographic applications. The ways in which a relational database system is supplemented with unconventional spatial indexing structures, additional spatial subsystems and query processors are described in great detail. The work presents an extensive survey of existing spatial indexing techniques and a taxonomy of the extensions to the multidimensional indexing structures. An extensive experimental analysis of spatial indexes is presented. The work covers the following areas: - the design of geographic information systems (GIS) - extended query languages for GIS - spatial indexing mechanisms - query processing strategies. The author presents his own skd-trees and extended query optimization strategies. The survey of spatial indexing structures for non-zero sized objects provides a framework for workers in the field of spatial information systems to evaluate spatial access methods. The consideration of query optimization will assist understanding of the role of that topic in GIS.
