In our increasingly mobile world the ability to access information on demand at any time and place can satisfy people's information needs as well as confer on them a competitive advantage. The emergence of battery-operated, low-cost and portable computers such as palmtops and PDAs, coupled with the availability and exploitation of wireless networks, have made possible the potential for ubiquitous computing. Through the wireless networks, portable equipments will become an integrated part of existing distributed computing environments, and mobile users can have access to data stored at information servers located at the static portion of the network even while they are on the move. Traditionally, information is retrieved following a request-response model. However, this model is no longer adequate in a wireless computing environment. First, the wireless channel is unreliable and the bandwidth is low compared to the wired counterpart. Second, the environment is essentially asymmetric with a large number of mobile users accessing a small number of servers. Third, battery-operated portable devices can typically operate only for a short time because of the short battery lifespan.Thus, clients are expected to be disconnected most of the time. To overcome these limitations, there has been a proliferation of research efforts on designing data delivery mechanisms to support wireless computing more effectively. This work focuses on such mechanisms. The purpose is to provide a review of recent advances on energy-efficient data delivery protocols, efficient wireless channel bandwidth utilization, reliable broadcasting and cache invalidation strategies for clients with long disconnection time.

The needs of these applications are far more complex than traditional business applications. They call for support of objects with complex data types, such as images and spatial objects, and for support of objects with wildly varying numbers of index terms, such as documents. Traditional indexing techniques such as the B-tree and its variants do not efficiently support these applications, and so new indexing mechanisms have been developed. As a result of the demand for database support for new applications, there has been a proliferation of new indexing techniques. Designed for practitioners and database and application developers, this work explains best practice, guiding the selection of appropriate indexes for each application. For researchers, this book provides a foundation for the development of new and more robust indexes. This conference provides an international forumfortechnicaldiscussionamongresearchers,developersandusersofdatabase systems from academia, business and industry. DASFAA focuses on research in databasetheory,andthedevelopmentandapplicationsofadvancedDBMSte- nologies. This was the second time that this conference has been held in China, the ?rst time was in Hong Kong in 2001. China is the third largest nation in terms of size, with the largest population in the world. The capital, Beijing, is a great metropolis, famous in Asia and throughout the world. We therefore were most privileged to host this conference in this renowned location. This volume contains papers selected for presentation and includes the three keynote talks, by Dr. Philip Yu, Prof. Elisa Bertino and Prof. Deyi Li. The conference also featured two tutorials: (1) Data Mining Techniques for MicroarrayDatasets,byLeiLiu,JiongYangandAnthonyTung,and(2)Pattern Management:Models,Languages,andArchitecturalIssues,byBarbaraCatania.ThetechnicalprogramoftheconferencewasselectedbyadistinguishedProgram Committee led by two PC Co-chairs, Lizhu Zhou and Beng Chin Ooi. The 89 members, half of whom reside outside Asia, made the committee a truly inter- tional one. They faced a di?cult task in selecting 67 regular papers and 15 short papersfrommanyverygoodcontributions.Thisyearthenumberofsubmissions, 302, was a record high for DASFAA conferences since the ?rst conference held in 1989 in Seoul, Korea. This monograph describes methods for extending relational database systems for geographic applications. The ways in which a relational database system is supplemented with unconventional spatial indexing structures, additional spatial subsystems and query processors are described in great detail. The work presents an extensive survey of existing spatial indexing techniques and a taxonomy of the extensions to the multidimensional indexing structures. An extensive experimental analysis of spatial indexes is presented. The work covers the following areas: - the design of geographic information systems (GIS) - extended query languages for GIS - spatial indexing mechanisms - query processing strategies. The author presents his own skd-trees and extended query optimization strategies. The survey of spatial indexing structures for non-zero sized objects provides a framework for workers in the field of spatial information systems to evaluate spatial access methods. The consideration of query optimization will assist understanding of the role of that topic in GIS.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) technology, or peer computing, is a paradigm that is viewed as a potential technology for redesigning distributed architectures and, consequently, distributed processing. Yet the scale and dynamism that characterize P2P systems demand that we reexamine traditional distributed technologies. A paradigm shift that includes self-reorganization, adaptation and resilience is called for.
