On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we would like to welcome you to the proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Database Systems for - vanced Applications (DASFAA 2005). This conference provides an international forumfortechnicaldiscussionamongresearchers,developersandusersofdatabase systems from academia, business and industry. DASFAA focuses on research in databasetheory,andthedevelopmentandapplicationsofadvancedDBMSte- nologies. This was the second time that this conference has been held in China, the ?rst time was in Hong Kong in 2001. China is the third largest nation in terms of size, with the largest population in the world. The capital, Beijing, is a great metropolis, famous in Asia and throughout the world. We therefore were most privileged to host this conference in this renowned location. This volume contains papers selected for presentation and includes the three keynote talks, by Dr. Philip Yu, Prof. Elisa Bertino and Prof. Deyi Li. The conference also featured two tutorials: (1) Data Mining Techniques for MicroarrayDatasets,byLeiLiu,JiongYangandAnthonyTung,and(2)Pattern Management:Models,Languages,andArchitecturalIssues,byBarbaraCatania.ThetechnicalprogramoftheconferencewasselectedbyadistinguishedProgram Committee led by two PC Co-chairs, Lizhu Zhou and Beng Chin Ooi. The 89 members, half of whom reside outside Asia, made the committee a truly inter- tional one. They faced a di?cult task in selecting 67 regular papers and 15 short papersfrommanyverygoodcontributions.Thisyearthenumberofsubmissions, 302, was a record high for DASFAA conferences since the ?rst conference held in 1989 in Seoul, Korea. We wish to express our thanks to the Program Committee members, external reviewers, and all authors for submitting their papers to this conference.

We are pleased to have a very strong program. Acceptance into the conference proceedings was extremely competitive. From the 322 submissions from 27 countries and regions, the Program Committee selected 34 full papers and 47 short papers for presentation at the conference and inclusion in the proceedings. The c- tributed papers cover a wide range of data mining topics and a diverse spectrum of interesting applications. The Program Committee worked very hard to select these papers through a rigorous review process and extensive discussion, and finally c- posed a diverse and exciting program for ADMA 2009. An important feature of the main program was the truly outstanding keynote spe- ers program. Edward Y. Chang, Director of Research, Google China, gave a talk titled "Confucius and 'Its' Intelligent Disciples". Being right in the forefront of data mining applications to the world's largest knowledge and data base, the Web, Dr. Chang - scribed how Google's Knowledge Search product help to improve the scalability of machine learning for Web-scale applications. Charles X. Ling, a seasoned researcher in data mining from the University of Western Ontario, Canada, talked about his in- vative applications of data mining and artificial intelligence to gifted child education.

We live in an age of rapid technological development. The Internet already affects our lives in many ways. Indeed, we continue to depend more, and more intrinsically, on the Internet, which is increasingly becoming a fundamental piece of societal infrastructure, just as water supply, electricity grids, and transportation networks have been for a long time. But while these other infrastructures are relatively static, the Internet is undergoing swift and fundamental change: Notably, the Internet is going mobile. The world has some 6.7 billion humans, 4 billion mobile phones, and 1.7 billion Internet users. The two most populous continents, Asia and Africa, have relatively low Internet penetration and hold the greatest potentials for growth. Their mobile phone users by far outnumber their Internet users, and the numbers are growing rapidly. China and India are each gaining about half a dozen million new phone users per month. Users across the globe as a whole increasingly embrace mobile Internet devices, with smart phone sales are starting to outnumber PC sales. Indeed, these and other facts suggest that the Internet stands to gain a substantial mobile component. This mega trend towards “mobile” is enabled by rapid and continuing advances in key technology areas such as mobile communication, consumer electronics, g- positioning, and computing. In short, this is the backdrop for this very timely book on moving objects by Xiaofeng Meng and Jidong Chen.

Database Systems for Advanced Applications (DASFAA) is an international - rum for academic exchanges and technical discussions among researchers,dev- opers, and users of databases from academia, business, and industry.
