Introduction to Large Truncated Toeplitz Matrices is a text on the application of functional analysis and operator theory to some concrete asymptotic problems of linear algebra. The book contains results on the stability of projection methods, deals with asymptotic inverses and Moore-Penrose inversion of large Toeplitz matrices, and embarks on the asymptotic behavoir of the norms of inverses, the pseudospectra, the singular values, and the eigenvalues of large Toeplitz matrices. The approach is heavily based on Banach algebra techniques and nicely demonstrates the usefulness of C*-algebras and local principles in numerical analysis. The book includes classical topics as well as results obtained and methods developed only in the last few years. Though employing modern tools, the exposition is elementary and aims at pointing out the mathematical background behind some interesting phenomena one encounters when working with large Toeplitz matrices. The text is accessible to readers with basic knowledge in functional analysis. It is addressed to graduate students, teachers, and researchers with some inclination to concrete operator theory and should be of interest to everyone who has to deal with infinite matrices (Toeplitz or not) and their large truncations.

These include Peller’s grandiose book on Hankel ope- tors and their applications and Nikolski’s beautiful easy reading on operators, functions, and systems, with emphasis on topics connected with the names of Hardy, Hankel, and Toeplitz. They also include books by the authors together withHagen,Roch,Yu.Karlovich,Spitkovsky,Grudsky,andRabinovich.Thus, results, techniques, and developments in the ?eld of Toeplitz operators are now well presented in the monographic literature. Despite these competitive works, we felt that large parts of the ?rst edition of the present monograp- whichismeanwhileoutofstock-havenotlosttheirfascinationandrelevance. Moreover, the ?rst edition has received a warm reception by many colleagues and became a standard reference. This book was originally intended as an extended version of our book "Invertibility and Asymptotics of Toeplitz Matrices", which appeared in 1983. We planned to discuss several topics in more detail, but our main concern was to incorporate a whole series of new results obtained during the last few years. However, we soon realized that the program we had in mind required new thoughts from both the methodological and substantial point of view, and so we decided to attempt writing a completely new book on the analysis of Toeplitz operators. There are at least two reasons for the continuous and increasing interest in Toeplitz operators. On the one hand, Toeplitz operators are of importance in connection with a variety of problems in physics, probability theory, information and control theory, and several other fields. Although we shall not embark on these problems, the selection of the material of this book is to a certain extent determined by such applications. On the other hand, besidesthe differential operators, Toeplitz operators constitute one of the most important classes of non-selfadjoint operators and they are a fascinating example of the fruitful interplay between such topics as operator theory, function theory, and the theory of Banach algebras. One main purpose of this book is to elucidate some of the ideas and methods illustrating just the latter aspect.

This volume presents the proceedings of the 11th Conference on Problems and Methods in Mathematical Physis (11th TMP), held in Chemnitz, Germany, March 25-28th, 1999. The conference was dedicated to Siegfried Prossdorf, who made important contributions to the theory and numerical analysis of operator equations and their applications in mathematical physics and mechanics. The main part of the book comprises original research papers. The topics covered range from: integral and pseudodifferential equations; boundary value problems; operator theory; boundary element and wavelet methods; approximation theory and inverse problems; to various concrete problems and applications in physics and engineering. All the topics reflect Siegfried Prossdorf's broad spectrum of research activities. The volume also contains articles describing the life and mathematical achievements of Prossdorf and includes a list of his publications.

Various aspects of numerical analysis for equations arising in boundary integral equation methods have been the subject of several books published in the last 15 years [95, 102, 183, 196, 198]. Prominent examples include various classes of o- dimensional singular integral equations or equations related to single and double layer potentials. Usually, a mathematically rigorous foundation and error analysis for the approximate solution of such equations is by no means an easy task. One reason is the fact that boundary integral operators generally are neither integral operatorsof the formidentity plus compact operatornor identity plus an operator with a small norm. Consequently, existing standard theories for the numerical analysis of Fredholm integral equations of the second kind are not applicable. In the last 15 years it became clear that the Banach algebra technique is a powerful tool to analyze the stability problem for relevant approximation methods [102, 103, 183, 189]. The starting point for this approach is the observation that the ? stability problem is an invertibility problem in a certain BanachorC -algebra. As a rule, this algebra is very complicated – and one has to ?nd relevant subalgebras to use such tools as local principles and representation theory. However,invariousapplicationsthereoftenarisecontinuousoperatorsacting on complex Banach spaces that are not linear but only additive – i. e. , A(x+y)= Ax+Ay for all x,y from a given Banach space. It is easily seen that additive operators 1 are R-linear provided they are continuous.
