Introduction to Large Truncated Toeplitz Matrices is a text on the application of functional analysis and operator theory to some concrete asymptotic problems of linear algebra. The book contains results on the stability of projection methods, deals with asymptotic inverses and Moore-Penrose inversion of large Toeplitz matrices, and embarks on the asymptotic behavoir of the norms of inverses, the pseudospectra, the singular values, and the eigenvalues of large Toeplitz matrices. The approach is heavily based on Banach algebra techniques and nicely demonstrates the usefulness of C*-algebras and local principles in numerical analysis. The book includes classical topics as well as results obtained and methods developed only in the last few years. Though employing modern tools, the exposition is elementary and aims at pointing out the mathematical background behind some interesting phenomena one encounters when working with large Toeplitz matrices. The text is accessible to readers with basic knowledge in functional analysis. It is addressed to graduate students, teachers, and researchers with some inclination to concrete operator theory and should be of interest to everyone who has to deal with infinite matrices (Toeplitz or not) and their large truncations.

This book presents 29 invited articles written by participants of the International Workshop on Operator Theory and its Applications held in Chemnitz in 2017. The contributions include both expository essays and original research papers illustrating the diversity and beauty of insights gained by applying operator theory to concrete problems. The topics range from control theory, frame theory, Toeplitz and singular integral operators,  Schrödinger, Dirac, and Kortweg-de Vries operators,  Fourier integral operator zeta-functions, C*-algebras and Hilbert C*-modules to questions from harmonic analysis, Monte Carlo integration, Fibonacci Hamiltonians, and many more. The book offers researchers in operator theory open problems from applications that might stimulate their work and shows those from various applied fields, such as physics, engineering, or numerical mathematics how to use the potential of operator theory to tackle interesting practical problems.

This volume is dedicated to the memory of Harold Widom (1932–2021), an outstanding mathematician who has enriched mathematics with his ideas and ground breaking work since the 1950s until the present time. It contains a biography of Harold Widom, personal notes written by his former students or colleagues, and also his last, previously unpublished paper on domain walls in a Heisenberg–Ising chain. Widom's most famous contributions were made to Toeplitz operators and random matrices. While his work on random matrices is part of almost all the present-day research activities in this field, his work in Toeplitz operators and matrices was done mainly before 2000 and is therefore described in a contribution devoted to his achievements in just this area. The volume contains 18 invited and refereed research and expository papers on Toeplitz operators and random matrices. These present new results or new perspectives on topics related toWidom's work.

This volume contains the proceedings of the International Workshop on Operator Theory and Applications held at the University of Algarve in Faro, Portugal, September 12-15, in the year 2000. The main topics of the conference were !> Factorization Theory; !> Factorization and Integrable Systems; !> Operator Theoretical Methods in Diffraction Theory; !> Algebraic Techniques in Operator Theory; !> Applications to Mathematical Physics and Related Topics. A total of 94 colleagues from 21 countries participated in the conference. The major part of participants came from Portugal (32), Germany (17), Israel (6), Mexico (6), the Netherlands (5), USA (4) and Austria (4). The others were from Ukraine, Venezuela (3 each), Spain, Sweden (2 each), Algeria, Australia, Belorussia, France, Georgia, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Russia and Turkey (one of each country). It was the 12th meeting in the framework of the IWOTA conferences which started in 1981 on an initiative of Professors 1. Gohberg (Tel Aviv) and J. W. Helton (San Diego). Up to now, it was the largest conference in the field of Operator Theory in Portugal.

Many problems of the engineering sciences, physics, and mathematics lead to con volution equations and their various modifications. Convolution equations on a half-line can be studied by having recourse to the methods and results of the theory of Toeplitz and Wiener-Hopf operators. Convolutions by integrable kernels have continuous symbols and the Cauchy singular integral operator is the most prominent example of a convolution operator with a piecewise continuous symbol. The Fredholm theory of Toeplitz and Wiener-Hopf operators with continuous and piecewise continuous (matrix) symbols is well presented in a series of classical and recent monographs. Symbols beyond piecewise continuous symbols have discontinuities of oscillating type. Such symbols emerge very naturally. For example, difference operators are nothing but convolution operators with almost periodic symbols: the operator defined by (A

This volume is dedicated to Bernd Silbermann on the oc- casion of his sixtieth birthday. It consists of selected papers devoted to the inexhaustible and ever-young fields of Toeplitz matrices and singular integral equations, and thus to areas Bernd Silbermann has been enriching by fundamental con- tributions for the last three decades. Most authors of this volume participated in the conference organized and sponsored by the Department of Mathematics (under the deans Dieter Happel and Jiirgen vom Scheidt) of the Chemnitz University of Technology in honor of Bernd Silbermann in Pobershau, April 8-12, 2001. The majority of the papers presented here are based on the talks given on that conference. We thank all contributors for their enthusiasm when preparing the articles for this volume. His parents were farmers. To this day, he is proud of his ability to drive a tractor. He went to school in Langhennersdorffrom 1947 to 1955, and in the sub- sequent two years he apprenticed to a grocer (and really sold fish). From 1958 to 1962 he attended a school in Chemnitz, and from 1962 to 1967, in the heyday of Soviet mathematics, he was a student of mathematics at the Lomonosov University in Moscow. His lecturers included such eminent mathematicians as P. S.

Award-winning monograph of the Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Prize 1997.This book is a self-contained exposition of the spectral theory of Toeplitz operators with piecewise continuous symbols and singular integral operators with piecewise continuous coefficients. It includes an introduction to Carleson curves, Muckenhoupt weights, weighted norm inequalities, local principles, Wiener-Hopf factorization, and Banach algebras generated by idempotents. Some basic phenomena in the field and the techniques for treating them came to be understood only in recent years and are comprehensively presented here for the first time. The material has been polished in an effort to make advanced topics accessible to a broad readership. The book is addressed to a wide audience of students and mathematicians interested in real and complex analysis, functional analysis and operator theory.

Since the late 1980s, Toeplitz operators and matrices have remained a ?eld of extensive research and the development during the last nearly twenty years is impressive. One encounters Toeplitz matrices in plenty of applications on the one hand, and Toeplitz operators con?rmed their role as the basic elementary building blocks of more complicated operators on the other. Several monographs on Toeplitz and Hankel operators were written d- ing the last decade. These include Peller’s grandiose book on Hankel ope- tors and their applications and Nikolski’s beautiful easy reading on operators, functions, and systems, with emphasis on topics connected with the names of Hardy, Hankel, and Toeplitz. They also include books by the authors together withHagen,Roch,Yu.Karlovich,Spitkovsky,Grudsky,andRabinovich.Thus, results, techniques, and developments in the ?eld of Toeplitz operators are now well presented in the monographic literature. Despite these competitive works, we felt that large parts of the ?rst edition of the present monograp- whichismeanwhileoutofstock-havenotlosttheirfascinationandrelevance. Moreover, the ?rst edition has received a warm reception by many colleagues and became a standard reference. This encouraged us to venture on thinking about a second edition, and we are grateful to the Springer Publishing House for showing an interest in this.

This volume provides an introduction to convolution operators with matrix-valued almost periodic or semi-almost periodic symbols. The basic tools for the treatment of the operators are Wiener-Hopf factorisation and almost periodic factorization. These factorisations are systematically investigated and explicitly constructed for interesting concrete classes of matrix functions. The material covered by this book ranges from classical results through to a first comprehensive presentation of the core of the theory of almost periodic factorization up to the latest achievements, such as the construction of factorisations by means of the Portuguese transformation and the solution of corona theorems. This book is addressed to a wide audience in the mathematical and engineering sciences. It is accessible to readers with basic knowledge in functional, real, complex and harmonic analysis, and it should be of interest to those who have to deal with the factorization of operators or matrix functions.
