This self-contained introduction to the behavior of several spectral characteristics of large Toeplitz band matrices is the first systematic presentation of a relatively large body of knowledge. Covering everything from classic results to the most recent developments, Spectral Properties of Banded Toeplitz Matrices is an important resource. The spectral characteristics include determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, pseudospectra and pseudomodes, singular values, norms, and condition numbers. Toeplitz matrices emerge in many applications and the literature on them is immense. They remain an active field of research with many facets, and the material on banded ones until now has primarily been found in research papers.The book may serve both as a text for introducing the material and as a reference. The approach is based on the know-how and experience of the authors in combining functional analytical methods with hard analysis and in applying operator theoretical methods to matrix theory, which reveals the essence of several phenomena and leads to significant improvements in existing results. All basic results presented in the book are precisely stated as theorems and accompanied by full proofs.

The aim of the book is to present new results in operator theory and its applications. In particular, the book is devoted to operators with automorphic symbols, applications of the methods of modern operator theory and differential geometry to some problems of theory of elasticity, quantum mechanics, hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations with multiple characteristics, Laplace-Beltrami operators on manifolds with singular points. Moreover, the book comprises new results in the theory of Wiener-Hopf operators with oscillating symbols, large hermitian Toeplitz band matrices, commutative algebras of Toeplitz operators, and discusses a number of other topics.

Consistent with the topics of recent IWOTA meetings, IWOTA 2009 was designed as a comprehensive, inclusive conference covering all aspects of theoretical and applied operator theory, ranging from classical analysis, differential and integral equations, complex and harmonic analysis to mathematical physics, mathematical systems and control theory, signal processing and numerical analysis. The conference brought together international experts for a week-long stay at Hotel Real de Minas, in an atmosphere conducive to fruitful professional interactions. These Proceedings reflect the high quality of the papers presented at the conference.

We offer the reader of this book some specimens of "infinity" that we seized from the "mathematical jungle" and trapped within the solid cage of analysis The creation of the theory of singular integral equations in the mid 20th century is associated with the names of N.1. Muskhelishvili, F.D. Gakhov, N.P. Vekua and their numerous students and followers and is marked by the fact that it relied principally on methods of complex analysis. In the early 1960s, the development of this theory received a powerful impulse from the ideas and methods of functional analysis that were then brought into the picture. Its modern architecture is due to a constellation of brilliant mathemati- cians and the scientific collectives that they produced (S.G. Mikhlin, M.G. Krein, B.V. Khvedelidze, 1. Gohberg, LB. Simonenko, A. Devinatz, H. Widom, R.G. Dou- glas, D. Sarason, A.P. Calderon, S. Prossdorf, B. Silbermann, and others). In the ensuing period, the Fredholm theory of singular integral operators with a finite index was completed in its main aspects in wide classes of Banach and Frechet spaces.

In 1967, at the age of 32, six years after he defended his Ph.D. thesis, I.B. - monenko defended his thesis for a degree of Doctor of Science. In this thesis, entitled “Operators of local type and some other problems of the theory of linear operators,” he sharply turned towards the wide usage of the general methods of functional analysis. In 1971 professor I.B. Simonenko became the head of the - merical Mathematics Chair. The following year this chair was split into two; I.B. became the head of one of them, the Chair of Algebra and Discrete Mathematics. The Chair of Algebra and Discrete Mathematics can be rightfully called the Chair of I.B. Simonenko. Here he worked together with his colleagues, students, and the students of his students. Here he fully developed his teaching talent. He lectured on “Algebra and geometry,” “Mathematical logic,” “Discrete mathem- ics,” and “Mathematical analysis”.
