The Norton Critical Edition includes five major plays spanning Ibsen’s long career in recent translations by Brian Johnston (Peer Gynt, The Wild Duck, and The Master Builder) and Brian Johnston and Rick Davis (A Doll House and Hedda Gabler). The translation of Peer Gynt appears for the first time in this Norton Critical Edition.“Backgrounds” gives students an understanding of Ibsen’s creative process with selections from his correspondence and other writings. Twenty-seven documents have been collected and arranged by play, with a section of autobiographical writings at the end.Ibsen’s plays continue to provoke diverse commentary. “Criticism” includes nineteen of the most important responses to Ibsen’s work, among them essays by Bernard Shaw, Sandra Saari, E. M. Forster, Hugh Kenner, and Joan Templeton.A Chronology and Selected Bibliography are also included.

Brian Johnston's approach to Ibsen, now well known, is unlike any other. Johnston sees Ibsen's twelve realist plays as a single cyclical work, the "realist" method of which hides a much larger poetic intention than has previously been suspected. He believes that the cycle constitutes one of the major works of the European imagination, comparable in scale to Goethe or Dante. And he has shown Ibsen to be the heir to Romantic and Hegelian art and thought, adapting this heritage to the circumstances of his own day.This work demonstrates how the language and scene, characters and "props," of the Ibsen dramas establish a bold and far-reaching theatrical goal: nothing less than an account of our biological and cultural identity in its multilayered totality. Johnston argues that Ibsen's realist text, while stimulating the appearance of nineteenth-century life, also objectively and precisely builds up an alternative image in which archetypal figures and situations from our cultural past repossess the realist stage. Thus he sees the Ibsen "strategy" in his realist plays as twofold: (1) the dialectical subversion of the nineteenth-century reality presented in the plays, and (2) the forced recovery of the archetypal from the past, in a procedure similar to James Joyce's in Ulysses. By "supertext" Johnston means a reservoir of cultural reference upon which Ibsen continuously drew in his realist work just as in is earlier poetic and historical dramas.

Following Brian Johnston's death in 1994, Prime Minister John Major appeared to speak for the nation when he remarked that 'Summers will never be the same.' To an Englishman's ears, the sound of leather against willow will always be closely associated with the cheerful tones of Johnners.Brian Johnston was a man who admitted: 'I have this absurd hankering to make people laugh.' He also summed up his books as 'the meanderings of a remarkably happy and lucky person, to whom life, like cricket, is a funny game and still a lot of fun.' Lovingly edited by his eldest son, Barry, A Delicious Slice of Johnners is a wonderfully enjoyable compendium of three of Johnners' best loved books, the autobiographies It's Been a Lot of Fun and It's a Funny Game, and Rain Stops Play

To the Third Empire was first published in 1980. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions.Critical acclaim greeted Brian Johnston's 1975 book on Ibsen's final phase, The Ibsen Cycle. Choice called it "the single most provocative and critically exciting books of Ibsen criticism in decades." Johnston now turns his attention to the early works, using the same thematic premise - that the plays follow a clear progression, influenced by the Hegalian aesthetic that pervaded Europe in the mid-nineteenth century. The result is an explanation of the early career that demonstrates both its unity and its essential relation to the realistic cycle that followed. In advancing his argument Johnston provides close readings of ten plays, ranging from Cataline to Emperor and Galilean and including Brand and Peer Gynt. Scholars and students of drama, comparative literature, and Ibsen studies will find To the Third Empire an essential work.

Why did God go into such great detail with Moses as to exactly how the Tabernacle was to be built and the offerings that were to be made there? And why did He include it all in our Bibles? We might think of Samson as a flawed hero - but as Brian Johnston explores in this concise 8-chapter study, there are a number of elements of his life which are a wonderful picture of Jesus!

In this latest book from the Search For Truth Series, Brian Johnston takes a practical look at family life through the lens of Joseph's experiences in the various 'homes' that he found himself in, and also explores how the apostle Paul's close relationship with the Church of God in Thessalonika resembles a parental one.

As Brian Johnston explains, 8 different prepositions are used in the Holy Spirit's inspiration of the apostle Paul's writings, and this is no accident for each of them tells us something different about our relationship with Jesus: Through Christ (Our Mediator), On Christ (Our Foundation), In Christ (Our Inheritance), Under Christ (Our Lord), With Christ (Our Life), Unto Christ (Our Master And Judge), For Christ (Our Lover), Of Christ (Our Model).  Also included is a bonus book "e;Faith with Focus"e; which looks at four "e;one things"e; that the Bible talks about.

Bible teacher and radio broadcaster Brian Johnston explores the book of Ephesians, including such topics as the Holy Spirit, prayer, God's glory, and the armour of God. Brian remains true to his signature down-to-earth and accessible style in this latest book, but don't make the mistake of thinking there isn't some real spiritual meat here!  Also included are three chapters on Philemon.

Martin Luther didn't seem overly impressed with the Bible letter by James, describing it as 'a right strawy epistle'! It seems he felt disappointed it didn't contain any exalted description of Christ, nor make reference to the work of the Spirit. It's true that James doesn't deal with the glories of Christ and his Church or with the great Christian blessings, nor does he transport us to the world to come. But he forces us to face up squarely to practical realities and their ethical implications. Bible teacher Brian Johnston brings us face to face with them in a down-to-earth style that perhaps James himself would have appreciated!

The apostle Paul says in Romans 9:4-5: "e;who are Israelites, to whom pertain the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service of God, and the promises; of whom are the fathers and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God, Amen."e;Perhaps you hadn’t noticed this little gem tucked away in the middle of the letter, but it is a tremendous description of what it meant to be among God’s people in the past. We are not so much interested in a history lesson, of course, but in seeing to what extent each of these eight great can find its answer today in our service for God.

In this short book, Brian Johnston takes an easy-to-read look at five women who appear in the genealogy of Jesus in the New Testament - Ruth, Tamar, Bathsheba, Rahab and Mary - women who through God's grace were used by Him despite some very challenging circumstances.

The unseen movement of the Holy Spirit in the creation, the incarnation, the inspiration (of Scripture), mission (the gospel) and the foundation (of churches of God).2. The movement of God to deal with the pride of Satan, which started before creation and will end with the Devil being thrown into the Lake of Fire, along with his angels and unbelievers.

Mindfulness is the trendy meditation offshoot recently endorsed by everyone from National Health Service departments in the UK to Oprah Winfrey in the US. In view of its possible Buddhist origins and the danger of becoming self-absorbed, is there a such a thing as a Biblical Mindfulness that Jesus could endorse?   That's the question that Brian Johnston answers in his timely new book, as he re-introduces us to the transforming power of biblical meditation which, instead of emptying the mind, fills it with a sense of the presence and immediacy of God, and His relevance to what we're experiencing at any moment. Topics include filling our minds not emptying them, having a sense of God's presence, power and purposes, being mindful of the things of God, renewing your mind, changing your mind (and your life) in '4 r's, putting off (the forgotten biblical discipline of mortification), using the 'SIMPLEST' method of transformation, achieving soberness of mind, exercising a listening and discerning mind, having the mind and attitude of Christ, being mindful of what ultimately matters, and focusing on the beauty of God's glory.

Almost right from his birth, Jesus met people and had a dramatic impact on them.  Shepherds, tax collectors, fishermen, paralytics, widows, soldiers, the blind, the possessed – all came away changed in different ways.  But perhaps some of the most fascinating encounters of all came at the end of his earthly life and in the most difficult of circumstances.   This book highlights five men who met Jesus at, or near, the cross - perhaps for the first time.   For Pilate, Simon, the centurion, the thief and Joseph of Arimathea there were vital choices to be made – what was their decision to be?  Although we might be tempted to think otherwise, there's no avoiding an encounter with Jesus and no escaping the same question.  Will the answer be, "e;We don't want this man to be our King"e; or "e;Remember me, when You come into your kingdom?"e;
