Morality is a subject most ignored and little understood by modern psychological investigation. Why a person acts honorably, or heinously, is one of the most puzzling and least answered questions regarding human behavior. Here the authors posit that despite the fact that hatred and arrogance continually battle compassion and decency as humanity's driving force, people continue to develop altruism, empathy, and concern for others. Goldberg and Crespo demonstrate seven factors crucial to achieving a compassionate life.Goldberg and Crespo take us inside their treatment rooms, through history, across cultures and into their own personal worlds-at-large to meet clients and acquaintances including a would-be rapist, a virtuous stalker, an adulterous minister, and a young boy with little more than a matchbook and some pride to call his own. Together, the stories of these clients and historical figures including Nazis at Nuremberg reflect a vital theme: Virtuous behavior should not be a mystery. Morality is a subject most ignored and little understood by modern psychological investigation. Why a person acts honorably or heinously is one of the most puzzling and least answered questions regarding human behavior. The authors demonstrate that although within every human breast hatred and arrogance battle compassion and decency as a driving force, people do indeed develop altruism, empathy, and concern for others. Goldberg and Crespo outline seven crucial factors in the achievement of a compassionate life. This book addresses two audiences. First, it questions modern psychological scientists who have ignored the importance of compassion, virtue, and morality, focusing instead on contrived experimental situations rather than pursuing investigations in—as part of—the actual world in which we live. Yet it is also written for all people concerned with the moral crisis in comtemporary society, and all people seeking personal and social solutions to deal with this crisis.

What advice can they give to younger therapists about the perils of psychotherapy? In this, the first study of how the developmental issues of mid-life and beyond affect the lives and practices of psychotherapists, 64 highly experienced practitioners address these questions and many more.Speaking candidly of their own satisfactions, as well as their disillusionments, they reveal the challenges of practicing psychotherapy in a fast-paced, increasingly complex world. Dr. Goldberg draws upon his own three decades of experience as a psychotherapist and new theories of adult development to distill the wisdom of these therapists' reports. In analyzing the results from questionnaires completed by over fifty senior therapists and interviews with twelve master practitioners, he identifies the salient themes for psychotherapists in mid-life and beyond. From this empirical base he develops an existential, dialectical theory of human development. Most of the seasoned psychotherapists interviewed by Dr. Goldberg felt that they had triumphed over adversity at some point in their lives. Having come through the dark wood to the top of the mountain, they offer essential guidance to other therapists on how to keep one's practice vital and to deal with the various perils of psychotherapy.

This original research study of residential treatments of problem adolescents represents one of the few attempts in the field to observe in a systematic fashion the residents' living situation in the institutional setting. An innovative field experiment is developed to contrast the interaction of counsellors and residents as they create three distinctive cottage subcultures.

This volume is one of the first to concentrate on positive growth and development in a clinical arena, rather than loss and pathology. In contrast to the general theories and cross-sectional studies of existing adult developmental research, much of this volume looks at the whole-life level of development of adults through case studies. The book unites three compatible approaches to the study of adult development. The first considers the development of whole life. The second approach examines behavior during certain periods in adults' lives by combining clinical and developmental stage perspectives. The third approach examines periods of life following the work of Erikson, Levinson, and Vaillant. The editors of this volume believe that these three approaches form, in their synergy, a comprehensive and multifaceted approach to uniquely difficult problems of late adolescence and early adulthood. It is the unification of these three approches that makes this book unique in its field.

The syndrome of shame refers to the inner doubts and self-incriminations that prevent some individuals from living harmoniously and confidently. The fear of shame can lead to a lifetime of secrecy and cover-up of one's true feelings. In this book, Carl Goldberg provides a guide for dealing with the conditions that cause shame. He indicates the necessary steps for identifying and constructively using the sensitive feelings of shame to enable patients to foster a more satisfying and meaningful existence.

Murder, rape, and atrocity are serious social problems. Yet, despite their persistence, the reasons for deeply destructive behavior still elude contemporary psychological theories. Based on his four decades of clinical experience, humanistic psychoanalyst Dr. Carl Goldberg uses case studies of apparently irredeemable and dangerous people from all walks of life to dramatically demonstrate that even those who have led destructive lives can escape evil and be restored to more hopeful, compassionate, and responsible lives.Crucial to a probing examination and successful treatment of the dark side of life, Dr. Goldberg shows in his case studies, is addressing important psychological and philosophical issues ignored by contemporary psychologists and psychoanalysts. The Evil We Do is a book full of telling insights about the most troubling aspects of human nature-knowledge that is essential if American society is ever to deal effectively with the violence that plagues it.
