Hugo von Hofmannsthal bescheinigt der österreichischen Literatur, sie sei »Fiktion«; es gebe nur »eine deutsche Literatur, und in dieser die von Österreichern hervorgebrachten Werke«.Österreich ist demnach ein nicht ganz einfaches Thema. Unumstritten bleibt indes, dass Österreich ab dem 19. Jahrhundert zu einem impulsgebenden Zentrum der deutschsprachigen Literatur und Kultur wird. So versammelt der Band Topos Österreich Arbeiten aus der Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft mit Schwerpunkt auf der österreichischen Literatur der österreichischen Moderne.
