In this collection the multidimensional story of children’s literature in the formative period of the long nineteenth century is illuminated, questioned, and, in some respects, rewritten.Children’s literature might be characterised as the love-child of the Enlightenment and the Romantic movements, and much of its history over the long nineteenth century shows it being defined, shaped, and co-opted by a variety of agents, each of whom has their own ambitions for it and for its child readership. Is children’s literature primarily a way of educating children in the principles of reason and morality? A celebration of the Rousseauesque child? A source of pleasure and entertainment? Women, both as writers and as nurturers involved at an intimate and daily level with the raising of children, recognised early and often very explicitly the multiple capacities of literature to provide entertainment, useful information, moral education and social training, and the occasionally conflicting nature of these functions. This book was originally published as a special issue of Women’s Writing.

Sexuality is an important area of clients’ lives yet it is often neglected, both in the consulting room and in training. This book examines issues of sexuality in a positive and affirming light and considers how sexuality-related issues can be introduced into therapy and training. Sex and sexuality are important to consider in psychotherapy, psychology, counselling and health provision across a variety of contexts and are relevant to clinicians and therapists working in health and mental health settings as well as in specialist services such as sexual and reproductive health and HIV. Sex, Sexuality and Therapeutic Practice opens with a general discussion of sex and sexuality before considering how the therapists can think and talk about sexuality in practical and self-reflective ways in different circumstances. Each chapter in the book focuses on a specific topic with areas covered including: sexual diversity across the lifespanhealth and disabilitysexual and gender minority issueshow culture and sexuality interact. The manual provides up-to-date information, further reading, handouts for clients, self-reflective exercises and examples of training exercises for workshops and teaching. It is an essential resource for health professionals, therapists, clinicians, academics and trainers, and will support the practicing therapist as well as those in training.

Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy is a worldwide classic of modern literature for both children and adults. Challenging in its intellectual scope, ambitious scale and range of literary reference, it is also hugely controversial due to its critique of organised religion. This collection of original essays by an international team of distinguished scholars assesses Pullman's achievement and introduces readers to some of the key debates surrounding His Dark Materials. Covering topics such as religion, gender, childhood and scientific enquiry, the volume also discusses the Hollywood film of the first book and features a new interview with Pullman himself.

Whether watching Studio Ghibli adaptations of British children’s books, visiting Harry Potter sites in Britain or eating at Alice in Wonderland-themed restaurants in Tokyo, the Japanese have a close and multifaceted relationship with British children’s literature. In this, the first comprehensive study to explore this engagement, Catherine Butler considers its many manifestations in print, on the screen, in tourist locations and throughout Japanese popular culture. Taking stock of the influence of literary works such as Gulliver's Travels, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, Tom's Midnight Garden, and the Harry Potter series, this lively account draws on literary criticism, translation, film and tourist studies to explore how British children’s books have been selected, translated, understood, adapted and reworked into Japanese commercial, touristic and imaginative culture. Using theoretically informed case studies this book will consider both individual texts and their wider cultural contexts, translations and adaptations (such as the numerous adaptations of British children’s books by Studio Ghibli and others), the dissemination of distinctive tropes such as magical schools into Japanese children’s literature and popular culture, and the ways in which British children’s books and their settings have become part of way that Japanese people understand Britain itself.

Contributions by Douglas A. Anderson, Catherine Butler, Frances Critchley, Virginie Douglas, Vivienne Féasson, Dimitra Fimi, Frances Foster, Andrew Higgins, Kat J. Melia, Michael Mikesell, Amanda Potter, John D. Rateliff, Scott R. Robinson, SF Said, and Lisa Sainsbury Since its publication in 1972, Watership Down has become one of the most celebrated works of twentieth-century children’s literature. With more than fifty million copies sold worldwide, Richard Adams’s tale of a band of rabbits searching for a new home defied expectations with its epic scope, mythological depth, and environmental consciousness—qualities that continue to resonate more than fifty years later. A landmark of crossover fiction, the novel captivates readers of all ages through its sophisticated prose, vividly imagined world, and profound reflections on community, leadership, survival, and the natural world. Yet despite its critical and commercial success, Watership Down has received surprisingly little scholarly attention. This collection offers a long-overdue reappraisal of the novel’s significance, assembling contributions from an international range of scholars of literature, ecology, linguistics, classics, translation, film, and even the creator of Bunnies & Burrows, the Watership Down role-playing game. The essays explore the book’s mythopoeic structure, its place within the epic tradition, its invention of language and lore, and its powerful legacy in animal fiction and ecological thought. They also trace the novel’s complex adaptation history—from the controversial 1978 animated film to the 2018 Netflix miniseries—and examine its wide-reaching influence on writers, gamers, and environmentalists alike. As themes of displacement, climate change, and interspecies understanding come into ever-sharper focus, this volume shows how Adams’s rabbits still have much to teach us.

This Open Access book examines the implications of welfare policy for energy poverty and engages with key conceptual debates at the forefront of energy demand research. Academic work on energy poverty has rarely been brought into conversation with practice-theory-based approaches to energy use and sustainability. This book reveals how novel insights can be made visible through combining these different ways of thinking about energy demand issues. It presents a distinctive approach to energy poverty that places inequalities at the heart of debates about the advancing energy intensity of contemporary societies.
