The central Christian belief in salvation through the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ remains one of the most intractable mysteries of Christian faith. Throughout history, it has given rise to various theories of atonement, many of which have been subject to critique as they no longer speak to contemporary notions of evil and sin or to current conceptions of justice. One of the important challenges for contemporary Christian theology thus involves exploring new ways of understanding the salvific meaning of the cross. In Atonement and Comparative Theology, Christian theologians with expertise in Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Daoism, and African Religions reflect on how engagement with these traditions sheds new light on the Christian understanding of atonement by pointing to analogous structures of sin and salvation, drawing attention to the scandal of the cross as seen by the religious other, and re-interpreting aspects of the Christian understanding of atonement. Together, they illustrate the possibilities for comparative theology to deepen and enrich Christian theological reflection.

In the face of competing religious claims in our shrinking world, many turn to dialogue as a hopeful way of fostering understanding and reducing violence. But why does actual dialogue so often fail? This provocative essay investigates the possibilities and limits of interreligious dialogue. By showing the significant obstacles for dialogue within Christianity, the book also proposes ways in which these obstacles may be overcome from within. Major themes include Humility, Conviction, Interconnection, Empathy, and Generosity.

The first systematic overview of the field of comparative theologyMeaning and Method in Comparative Theology offers a synthesis of and a blueprint for the emerging field of comparative theology. It discusses various approaches to the field, the impact of religious views of other religions on the way in which comparative theology is conducted, and the particularities of comparative theological hermeneutics. Navigate religious hybridity with a systematic typology and critical framework As exposure to multiple religious traditions increases, scholars and practitioners face complex questions about religious belonging and identity. In Between Religions: On Religious Hybridity and Belonging surveys arguments for and against multiple religious belonging while offering a systematic typology of religious hybridity. Catherine Cornille, Professor of Comparative Theology at Boston College, examines this phenomenon from both individual and institutional perspectives. This volume analyzes the constituent components of religious belonging and develops degrees and kinds of religious hybridity into a coherent framework. It maintains a critical realist view of discrete religions while acknowledging fluid boundaries. The final chapter explores how religious traditions themselves can engage constructively with hybridity, offering resources for theological and phenomenological reflection on interreligious engagement. Readers will find: A comprehensive survey of scholarly arguments developed around multiple religious belonging and religious hybridity across diverse traditions and contextsSystematic analysis of what religious belonging entails, examining its dimensions and constituent components from phenomenological and theological perspectivesA strong typology distinguishing various kinds and degrees of religious hybridity for clearer scholarly and practical discussionCritical examination of religious hybridity from the self-understanding of religious traditions themselves rather than solely from individual perspectivesConstructive approaches for how religious traditions can engage with and learn from the phenomenon of religious hybridityDesigned for upper undergraduate and graduate courses in lived religion, interreligious dialogue, multiple religious belonging, religious pluralism, and comparative religion, In Between Religions provides scholars and students with analytical tools for understanding one of contemporary religion's most significant phenomena.
