Här får vi en illustrerad introduktion till stadsbyggnad, arkitektur och husbyggnad. I boken beskrivs hur en stad kan ha vuxit fram och hur livet där har förändrats under de senaste 150 åren. I ett stilhistoriskt avsnitt presenteras byggnader, möbler och föremål som är typiska för olika stilepoker från 1880 till 2020-talets början. Kopplingen mellan arkitektur och design blir tydlig. Att bygga ett hus är en komplicerad process som vi lotsas igenom steg för steg, från den första idéskissen till husets byggande, inredning, förvaltning och underhåll. Olika typer av bostadshus och deras konstruktion beskrivs. Pedagogiska fotografier och teckningar löper parallellt med texten och underlättar förståelsen. Cecilia Björk, arkitekt SAR/MSA, Lars Nordling arkitekt AIS, KTH och Laila Reppen arkitekt SAR/MSA har stor erfarenhet av praktisk samhällsplanering. De står också för de flesta av bokens illustrationer

Skildringen tar sin början under 1880-talet när många städer växer kraftigt i industrialiseringens spår. Det råder bostadsnöd och knappa ekonomiska förhållanden. Bostäderna värms med kakelugnar eller kaminer, maten lagas på vedspis och på gården finns torrdass. 120 år senare, år 2000 när berättelsen avslutas, är hög standard i kök och badrum en självklarhet. Nya trender avlöser varandra och många kök och badrum rivs ut och byggs om, långt innan det är tekniskt nödvändigt. Ökad kunskap om tidstypiska inredningar är en värdefull grund vid bevarande, renovering och ombyggnad. Inspiration kan hämtas ur olika tiders planlösningar, köksuppställningar och inredningar.

Byggnadsdetaljerna varierar med rådande arkitekturstil, det gäller allt från fasadernas komposition till fönstrens indelning och porthandtagens formgivning. Här får läsaren lust att lära och tolka olika tiders byggnader och detaljer. Kunskap ger rikare upplevelser och ständigt nya intryck av vardagsarkitekturen – vårt byggda kulturarv. Genom fotografier och ritningar visas tydligt hur bostadshusen i staden ursprungligen sett ut samt hur olika stilideal utvecklats. En ritningsdel gör det möjligt att tidsbestämma dörrfoder och golvsocklar – eller nytillverka.
