This illuminating volume explores the often-overlooked relationship between college student activism and well-being, drawing on a multi-phase study that explores college students’ perspectives on how their activism impacts their well-being.Based on a study of 119 US college students, the authors share their findings through a constructivist, qualitative lens, revealing three key themes: The link between student activism and students’ identities, the non-negotiable time costs of activism and associated burnout, and the ways that students and higher education can benefit from a different way of considering university and community care. With scholarship exploring the connections between college student activism and well-being still nascent, this book pioneers a fresh understanding of the intersection between student activism and well-being, amplifying authentic student voices throughout and offering practical recommendations for student support. Through a combination of personal narratives, data analysis, and expert commentary, it explores what inspires college student activists to work to create a more just and equitable society, as well as the prevalence of burnout and the tools students use to mitigate their struggles and improve their own well-being.This book will be suitable for both undergraduate and graduate students as well as scholars, practitioners, and professionals in the larger higher education and social justice community.

This book provides a cross-cultural analysis of how legislatures, judiciaries, NGOs, and corporations worldwide address workplace sexual harassment. Informed by the ongoing cultural relativism v. universalism debate, Cher Weixia Chen draws upon four theoretical models of gender and policy: the sameness model, the difference model, the dominance model, and the critical feminist model, injecting new vitality into the existing literature on sexual harassment.Chen systematically investigates and characterizes strategies for prohibiting workplace sexual harassment across the globe, moving beyond the Euro-American focus to offer a comprehensive global survey on an emerging universal human rights norm. She evaluates a vast range of data, including national workplace sexual harassment laws across 193 countries, 37 judicial decisions from the highest courts of 10 common law countries, and policies from 30 NGOs in six countries and the 50 largest global corporations. By raising awareness of the cultural variations in sexual harassment laws and policies, this book ultimately aims to contribute to improving the wellbeing of workers and building working environments free from harassment worldwide.Prohibiting Workplace Sexual Harassment is an essential resource for students and academics in gender and law, employment law, human rights, and law and society. Its diverse methodologies and engaging perspectives will also greatly benefit practising lawyers, policymakers and NGOs.

As domestic industrial relations and labor conditions have been seriously challenged by globalization, various international labor standards have been proposed to safeguard and promote labor rights. However, an important question remains: are these rules and standards enforceable and well enforced? Compliance and Compromise: The Jurisprudence of Gender Pay Equity examines the status of one of the core international labor standards—gender pay equity—that has been largely overlooked, and explores how domestic legislative and judicial systems respond to the core International Labor Organization Convention No. 100 on Equal Remuneration. It unravels under what circumstance legislative and judicial compliance occurs, with the novel application of the relatively new theory “transnational legal process” to explicate the phenomenon of “compliance”.
