This book surveys the practice of horse racing from antiquity to the modern period, and in this way offers a selective global history.
Unlike previous histories of horse racing, which generally make claims about the exclusiveness of modern sport and therefore diminish the importance of premodern physical contests, the contributors to this book approach racing as a deep history of diachronically comparable practices, discourses, and perceptions centered around the competitive staging of equine speed. In order to compare horse racing cultures from completely different epochs and regions, the authors respond to a series of core issues which serve as structural comparative parameters. These key issues include the spatial and architectural framework of races; their organization; victory prizes; symbolic representations of victories and victors; and the social range and identities of the participants. The evidence of these competitions is interpreted in its distinct historical contexts and with regard to specific cultural conditions that shaped the respective relationship between owners, riders, and horses on the global racetracks of pre-modernity and modernity.
The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of The International Journal of the History of Sport.

In der athenischen Demokratie des 5. Jahrhunderts besaß jeder Bürger das Recht, in Volksversammlungen zu reden, in der Praxis aber ergriff nur eine kleine Minderheit das Wort. Diese Männer wurden Demagogen genannt. Sie erfüllten als politische Experten eine wichtige Funktion bei der demokratischen Entscheidungsfindung, indem sie das Volk in den Versammlungen mit Informationen versorgten, politische Konzepte vorstellten und alternative Handlungsoptionen aufzeigten. Nach herkömmlicher Forschungsmeinung entstammten die Demagogen lange Zeit der alten Aristokratie; politische Macht habe auch in der Demokratie zunächst noch auf vornehmer Abkunft, Reichtum, überlegener Bildung und adligen Freundeszirkeln beruht. Erst nach dem Tod des Perikles 429 v. Chr. hätten Aufsteiger mit populistischen Methoden Einfluss auf das Volk gewinnen können. In Auseinandersetzung mit dieser Position plädiert der Autor dafür, dass die Auftretensweise der Demagogen auch schon vor dieser angeblichen Zäsur durch eine Inszenierung von Loyalität gegenüber der Polis und dem Volk geprägt war. Zwar besaßen alle Demagogen überdurchschnittliche ökonomische Ressourcen, doch in der politischen Kommunikation betonten sie gerade nicht ihre soziale Überlegenheit, sondern verringerten symbolisch den Abstand zum einfachen Bürger, etwa durch demonstrativen Verzicht auf eine luxuriöse Lebensführung und auf aristokratische Beziehungsnetze. Die politische Ordnung der athenischen Demokratie war eben gerade nicht in die traditionelle Sozialordnung eingebettet, sondern weitgehend von dieser losgelöst. Eine Veränderung trat erst im vorletzten Jahrzehnt des 5. Jahrhunderts ein, als ein Anspruch auf politischen Einfluss zunehmend mit traditionellen aristokratischen Ressourcen begründet wurde; dieser Prozess führte schließlich zum Umsturz von 411. - E-bokPDF, Tyska, 2010

This is the first e-book on athletics in the Hellenistic era, with 16 contributions covering a range of historical, archaeological and philological perspectives. Previous scholarship has focused primarily on the classical age and the Roman imperial period, but it was in the Hellenistic age that Greek sport saw several important developments: the spread of Greek athletic culture in the East following the campaigns of Alexander the Great, the foundation of new athletic contests, and the emergence of a professional association of athletes. Experts of ancient sport have long treated "e;money"e; and "e;honor"e; as opposites. Up to the 1970s, the idea of Greek gentlemen's sport prevailed. It is one of the most exciting challenges for sport historians to overcome this opposition and to develop a concept that integrates the economic and symbolic motivations of ancient athletes. From the very beginning, economic aspects played a role in Greek sport, and honor remained important until the end of ancient athletics. But despite these continuities there are obvious developments in favor of economic factors: Cash prizes grew in importance since the Hellenistic period, and symbolical honors awarded to victorious athletes by their hometowns were transformed into financial ones. Die Gladiatorenkämpfe verbreiteten sich während der römischen Kaiserzeit im ganzen Reich, auch in den griechischen Provinzen. Gerne betrachtet man sie als sicht- und meßbaren Ausdruck der Romanisierung. Doch wie „römisch“ waren die Gladiatorenkämpfe, welche Bedeutung hatte ihr römischer Ursprung aus der Perspektive der Griechen? In dieser Studie werden die Triebkräfte der Ausbreitung, vor allem aber die Wahrnehmung der Gladiatorenkämpfe durch die Griechen behandelt. Literarische Quellen zeigen, daß Gladiatorenkämpfe weniger zur Verhandlung eines Gegensatzes zwischen griechischer und römischer Kultur benutzt, sondern vielmehr in griechische Diskurse eingebunden wurden. Anhand der Grabdenkmäler läßt sich nachweisen, daß die Gladiatoren im Osten eine Selbstdarstellung an den Tag legten, die sich an derjenigen der Athleten orientierte; die Protagonisten der römischen Institution griffen damit auf griechische Traditionen zurück. Die Grabdenkmäler werden wegen ihrer besonderen Bedeutung für die behandelte Fragestellung in einem Katalog präsentiert. Die Forschungen zu den öffentlichen Spielen der Antike werden mit diesem Buch um einen bislang wenig erforschten Aspekt ergänzt.
