Multispecies Justice (MSJ) is a theory and practice seeking to correct the defects making dominant theories of justice incapable of responding to current and emerging planetary disruptions and extinctions. Multispecies Justice starts with the assumption that justice is not limited to humans but includes all Earth others, and the relationships that enable their functioning and flourishing. This Element describes and imagines a set of institutions, across all scales and in different spheres, that respect, revere, and care for the relationships that make life on Earth possible and allow all natural entities, humans included, to flourish. It draws attention to the prefigurative work happening within societies otherwise dominated by institutions characterised by Multispecies Injustice, demonstrating historical and ongoing practices of MSJ in different contexts. Academic appointments can bring forth unexpected and unforeseen contests and tensions, cause humiliation and embarrassment for unsuccessful applicants and reveal unexpected allies and enemies. It is also a time when harsh assessments can be made about colleagues’ intellectual abilities and their capacity as a scholar and fieldworker. The assessors’ reports were often disturbingly personal, laying bare their likes and dislikes that could determine the futures of peers and colleagues. Chicanery deals with how the founding Chairs at Sydney, the Australian National University, Auckland and Western Australia dealt with this process, and includes accounts of the appointments of influential anthropologists such as Raymond Firth and Alexander Ratcliffe-Brown.

Christine Winter konfrontiert ihre kurz nach DDR-Gründung geborene Heldin am Ende der 90er Jahre mit ihren verinnerlichten Werten und Vorstellungen vom Leben einschließlich ihres schwierigen Verhältnisses zu Männern, und begleitet sie bei ihrer Suche nach Orientierung in einer für sie neuen, oftmals verstörenden Gesellschaft. Mit Erstaunen stellt diese Frau fest, welch gläubige Sozialistin sie war, wie lange es dauerte, bis sie wagte, ihren eigenen Augen zu trauen. Ihre Erinnerungen führen sie völlig ungeordnet zu Orten und Ereignissen, die tief in ihr verschüttet waren. Die Bruchstücke fügen sich zu einem Bild, das zwar Lücken hat, dessen Farben zuweilen verwaschen sind, das aber dennoch eine Vorstellung davon vermittelt, wie es sich anfühlt, in den 50er und 60er Jahren in jenem Land aufzuwachsen, dessen Prägungen lebenslang nicht zu verleugnen sind.
