Understanding and employing cryptography has become central for securing virtually any digital application, whether user app, cloud service, or even medical implant.Heavily revised and updated, the long-awaited second edition of Understanding Cryptography follows the unique approach of making modern cryptography accessible to a broad audience, requiring only a minimum of prior knowledge. After introducing basic cryptography concepts, this seminal textbook covers nearly all symmetric, asymmetric, and post-quantum cryptographic algorithms currently in use in applications—ranging from cloud computing and smart phones all the way to industrial systems, block chains, and cryptocurrencies.Topics and features:Opens with a foreword by cryptography pioneer and Turing Award winner, Ron RivestHelps develop a comprehensive understanding of modern applied cryptographyProvides a thorough introduction to post-quantum cryptography consisting of the three standardized cipher familiesIncludes for every chapter a comprehensive problem set, extensive examples, and a further-reading discussionCommunicates, using a unique pedagogical approach, the essentials about foundations and use in practice, while keeping mathematics to a minimumSupplies up-to-date security parameters for all cryptographic algorithmsIncorporates chapter reviews and discussion on such topics as historical and societal contextThis must-have book is indispensable as a textbook for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses, as well as for self-study by designers and engineers. The authors have more than 20 years’ experience teaching cryptography at various universities in the US and Europe. In addition to being renowned scientists, they have extensive experience with applying cryptography in industry, fromwhich they have drawn important lessons for their teaching.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 4th International Workshop on Cryptographic Hardware and Embedded Systems, CHES 2002, held in Redwood Shores, California, USA in August 2002. The 41 revised full papers presented together with two invited contributions were carefully selected from 101 submissions during two rounds of reviewing and revision. The papers are organized in topical sections on attack strategies, finite field and modular arithmetic, elliptic curve cryptography, AES and AES candidates, tamper resistance, RSA implementation, random number generation, new primitives, hardware for cryptanalysis.

Ad hoc and sensor networks are making their way from research to real-world deployments. Body and personal-area networks, intelligent homes, environmental monitoring or inter-vehicle communications: there is almost nothing left that is not going to be smart and networked. While a great amount of research has been devoted to the pure networking aspects, ad hoc and sensor networks will not be successfully deployed if security, dependability, and privacy issues are not addressed adequately. As the first book devoted to the topic, this volume constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the First European Workshop on Security in Ad-hoc and Sensor Networks, ESAS, 2004, held in Heidelberg, Germany in August 2004. The 17 revised full papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 55 submissions. Among the key topics addressed are key distribution and management, authentication, energy-aware cryptographic primitives, anonymity and pseudonymity, secure diffusion, secure peer-to-peer overlays, and RFIDs.

Most innovations in the car industry are based on software and electronics, and IT will soon constitute the major production cost factor. It seems almost certain that embedded IT security will be crucial for the next generation of applications. Yet whereas software safety has become a relatively well-established field, the protection of automotive IT systems against manipulation or intrusion has only recently started to emerge.Lemke, Paar, and Wolf collect in this volume a state-of-the-art overview on all aspects relevant for IT security in automotive applications. After an introductory chapter written by the editors themselves, the contributions from experienced experts of different disciplines are structured into three parts. "Security in the Automotive Domain" describes applications for which IT security is crucial, like immobilizers, tachographs, and software updates. "Embedded Security Technologies" details security technologies relevant for automotive applications, e.g., symmetric and asymmetric cryptography, and wireless security. "Business Aspects of IT Systems in Cars" shows the need for embedded security in novel applications like location-based navigation systems and personalization. The first book in this area of fast-growing economic and scientific importance, it is indispensable for both researchers in software or embedded security and professionals in the automotive industry.

These are the proceedings of CHES 2003, the ?fth workshop on Cryptographic HardwareandEmbeddedSystems,heldinCologneonSeptember8-10,2003.As with every previous workshop, there was a record number of submissions despite themuchearlierdeadlineinthisyear'scallforpapers.Thisisaclearindication of the growing international importance of the scope of the conference and the relevance of the subject material to both industry and academia. The increasing competition for presenting at the conference has led to many excellent papers and a higher standard overall. From the 111 submissions, time constraintsmeantthatonly32couldbeaccepted.Theprogramcommitteewo- ed very hard to select the best. However, at the end of the review process there were a number of good papers - which it would like to have included but for which, sadly, there was insu?cient space. In addition to the accepted papers appearing in this volume, there were three invited presentations from Hans D- bertin (Ruhr-Universit. at Bochum, Germany), Adi Shamir (Weizmann Institute, Israel), and Frank Stajano (University of Cambridge, UK), and a panel d- cussion on the e?ectiveness of current hardware and software countermeasures against side channel leakage in embedded cryptosystems.

These are the pre-proceedings of CHES 2000, the second workshop on Cryp- graphicHardware andEmbedded Systems. The rst workshop, CHES'99, which was held at WPI in August 1999, was received quite enthusiastically by people in academia and industry who are interested in hardware and software imp- mentations of cryptography. We believe there has been a long-standing need for a workshop series combining theory and practice for integrating strong data - curity into modern communications and e-commerce applications. We are very glad that we had the opportunity to serve this purpose and to create the CHES workshop series. As is evident by the papers in these proceedings, there have been many excellentcontributions.Selectingthepapersforthisyear'sCHESwasnotaneasy task, and we regret that we had to reject several good papers due to the limited availability of time. There were 51 submitted contributions to CHES 2000, of which 25 were selected for presentation. This corresponds to a paper acceptance rate of 49% for this year, which is a decrease from the 64% acceptance rate for CHES'99.Allpaperswerereviewed.Inadditiontothecontributedpresentations, we have invited two speakers. As last year, the focus of the workshop is on all aspects of cryptographic hardware and embedded system design. Of special interest were contributions that describe new methods for e cient hardware implementations and hi- speed software for embedded systems, e.g., smart cards, microprocessors, DSPs, etc. In addition, there were again several very interesting and innovative - pers dealingwith cryptanalysis in practice, rangingfrom side-channel attacks to FPGA-based attack hardware.

These are the proceedings of CHES'99, the rst workshop on Cryptographic Hardware and Embedded Systems. As it becomes more obvious that strong security will be an important part of the next generation of communication, computer, and electronic consumer devices, we felt that a new type of cryp- graphic conference was needed. Our goal was to create a forum which discusses innovative solutions for cryptography in practice. Consequently, the focus of the CHES Workshop is on all aspects of cryptographic hardware and embedded s- tem design. Of special interest were contributions that describe new methods for e cient hardware implementations and high-speed software for embedded s- tems, e. g. , smart cards, microprocessors, or DSPs. We hope that the workshop will help to ll the gap between the cryptography research community and the application areas of cryptography. There were 42 submitted contributions to CHES'99, of which 27 were selected for presentation. All papers were reviewed. In addition, there were three invited speakers. We hope to continue to make the CHES Workshop a forum of intellectual exchange in creating the secure, reliable, and robust security solutions of tom- row.We thank everyone whose involvement made the CHES Workshop such a successful event, and in particular we thank Murat Aydos, Dan Bailey, Br- don Chetwynd, Adam Elbirt, Serdar Erdem, Jorge Guajardo, Linda Looft, Pam O'Bryant, Marie Piergallini, Erkay Sava s, and Adam Woodbury.
