Meanings of words are constantly changing, and the forces driving these changes are varied and diverse. Linguistic analyses are usually concerned with language-internal processes, while investigations of language-external historical developments tend to disregard linguistic considerations. It is evident, however, that an investigation of diachronic semantics will have to consider both sides: a specific theory of meaning including a proper place for lexical semantics on the one hand, and incorporate knowledge about the world and the social and cultural environment of speakers who use language as a tool for communication on the other.The collection focuses on meaning change as a topic of interdisciplinary research. Distinguished scholars in diachronic semantics, general linguistics, classical philology, philosophy of language, anthropology and history offer in depth studies of language internal and external factors of meaning change. Diese Grammatik stellt die Syntax und die Morphologie des Italienischen unter strukturellen und semantisch-pragmatischen Gesichtspunkten dar. Sie informiert ausführlich über die Bildung des einfachen und des komplexen Satzes, über die Flexionsmorphologie und über die Wortbildung. In einem besonderen Kapitel behandelt sie Pragmatik und Semantik der Artikelwörter, der Vergleichssätze, der Tempora und Modi, der Negation und der Wortstellung. Die zugrundeliegenden theoretischen Prinzipien sind die einer weitgehend lexikalisch kodierten Oberflächengrammatik. Deshalb wird den Phänomenen der Valenz und der grammatisch-semantischen Lexikonstruktur besondere Beachtung zuteil. Die Terminologie, soweit sie nicht traditionell ist, wird im Text eingeführt. Alle behandelten Erscheinungen werden durch einfache Beispiele illustriert. Die Grammatik richtet sich vor allem an ein deutschsprachiges Publikum. Sie enthält Anmerkungen, die u.a. auf deutsch-italienische Kontraste hinweisen, und den Beispielen folgt jeweils eine Übersetzung.

Over the past few decades, the book series Linguistische Arbeiten [Linguistic Studies], comprising over 500 volumes, has made a significant contribution to the development of linguistic theory both in Germany and internationally. The series will continue to deliver new impulses for research and maintain the central insight of linguistics that progress can only be made in acquiring new knowledge about human languages both synchronically and diachronically by closely combining empirical and theoretical analyses. To this end, we invite submission of high-quality linguistic studies from all the central areas of general linguistics and the linguistics of individual languages which address topical questions, discuss new data and advance the development of linguistic theory.
