In the early 1970’s, due to serious epistemological flaws, the demise of traditional New Testament research paradigms became imminent. A new generation of scholars started the search for a fresh approach, based on scientifically sound principles. Working within the stimulating atmosphere of the New Testament Society of South Africa, the author was one of the pioneers in developing a new, multi-dimensional research approach for New Testament studies. The articles in the present volume, written over a period of 25 years, reflect part of this journey, as viewed from a Pauline perspective. Combining the positive aspects of the traditional biblical research paradigms with the important insights of modern linguistics, literary science, semantics and pragmatics, particularly rhetoric, the author investigates the convergence of various influences in Paul’s pre-christian career. He proposes new possibilities of understanding Paul’s language and style, such as hyperbolical contrasts, typical of his Semitic background. Various aspects of his strategies of persuasion are investigated, such as creating an ethos, vilification, alienation and re-identification. The majority of articles concentrate on central elements in Pauline theology: belief in the resurrection of Jesus, the centrality of grace, the in Christ and related formulae, faith and obedience, justification in Romans, Christian identity, ethics and ethos, as portrayed in Romans.

Epigraphische Zeugnisse wurden in der Erforschung des frühen Christentums lange Zeit kaum beachtet. Allerdings sind die seit dem späten 2. Jahrhundert aufkommenden, von Christen oder für Christen hergestellten Inschriften eine unverzichtbare Quelle für die Rekonstruktion der Entwicklung christlicher Gemeinschaften, insbesondere in Regionen, in denen literarische Quellen spärlich überliefert oder nicht vorhanden sind. Inschriften, meist Grabinschriften, eröffnen Einblicke in die spezifischen regionalen Ausprägungen frühchristlicher Gruppen, ihre Leitungsstrukturen, ihre Bautätigkeit sowie ihre theologischen Anliegen. Vor allem aber machen sie die bemerkenswerte Vielfalt sichtbar, die diese Gemeinschaften prägte und die jeweils durch ihr kulturelles wie geographisches Umfeld bestimmt wurde. Der vorliegende Band, dem Andenken des bedeutenden Althistorikers Stephen Mitchell gewidmet, bietet eine Einführung in griechische Inschriften, die als christlich identifiziert werden können, und untersucht ihre historiographische Relevanz. Er vereint fünfzehn ausgewählte christliche Inschriften aus Kleinasien und Griechenland. Dreizehn Autorinnen und Autoren verschiedener Disziplinen - Cilliers Breytenbach, Timo Christian, Georgios Deligiannakis, Klaus Hallof, James R. Harrison, Ulrich Huttner, Stephen Mitchell, Markus Öhler, Julien Ogereau, Philipp Pilhofer, Daniela Summa, Paul Trebilco und Christiane Zimmermann - präsentieren eine sorgfältig kuratierte Auswahl besonders aussagekräftiger Inschriften aus dem 2. bis 6. Jahrhundert n. Chr., die sowohl die Individualität als auch die thematische Bandbreite dieser Texte und ihrer Botschaften hervorheben. Vier abschließende Beiträge - von Andreas Merkt (Alte Kirchengeschichte), Hartmut Leppin (Alte Geschichte), Sylvain Destephen (Epigraphik) und Heinz-Günther Nesselrath (Klassische Philologie) - verorten die ausgewählten Stücke in ihren umfassenderen historischen und literarischen Kontexten.

In diesem Buch geht es nicht um den Römerbrief als solchen, sondern um seine Rezeptions- und Wirkungsgeschichte im Lauf der Kirchen- und Theologiegeschichte von den Anfängen an bis in die Gegenwart. Zu Wort kommen Vertreter aller theologischen Disziplinen sowie der Philosophie. Die Rezeption des Paulus im Laufe der Theologiegeschichte vollzieht sich vor allem über seinen Brief an die Römer. Der vorliegende Band versammelt Einblicke in wichtige Facetten und Stationen dieser Rezeptionsgeschichte von den Anfängen bis in die Gegenwart (u. a. Augustin, Abaelard, Thomas von Aquin, Martin Luther, Karl Barth). Zu Wort kommen Vertreter aller theologischen Disziplinen und der Philosophie, um ein perspektivenreiches Bild des Römerbriefes in der Geschichte der Kirche zu entwerfen, das zugleich einen orientierenden Eindruck von der interdisziplinären Verknüpfung der theologischen Arbeit vermittelt. Die Beiträge sind aus einer fächerübergreifenden Lehrveranstaltung an der Theologischen Fakultät der Humboldt- Universität zu Berlin entstanden. This volume - a Festschrift in honour of the renowned Acts-scholar Eckhard Plümacher - contains thirteen articles on Luke's Acts of the Apostles. Presented are essays concerning Luke's language and style (Alexander, Koch, Steyn, Victor), the literary and historiographical technique applied in Acts (Moessner, Koch, Lindemann), on Luke's theology / Christology (Schröter, Vouga) and on the use (and abuse) of Acts for reconstructing aspects of the history of Early Christianity (Breytenbach, Horn, Schmithals) and for constructing theology relevant to modern culture (Vouga). Furthermore it contains a critical edition and commentary of the Martyrdom of Stephen with a discussion of its relationship to Acts (Bovon/Bouvier) and a presentation and discussion of some unknown Coptic Fragments of Acts (Bethge).

This volume contains a collection of essays in honour of Bernard C. Lategan, a renowned specialist on the modern reception of the New Testament. Besides offering anayses of Lategan’s own contribution to New Testament scholarship, the essays present and discuss interpretations of the New Testament from antiquity through contemporary critical scholarship. Topics covered include hermeneutical issues of historical Jesus research, intertextuality in antiquity, the interpretation of the New Testament in Africa, and the New Testament as literature. The collection thus provides a representative perspective on the diversity of New Testament scholarship in South Africa and elsewhere.

How did the first Christians interpret the death of Christ? The answer lies within the earliest Christian documents, primarily within the Pauline letters. Before the users of a modern language could hope to come near an adequate description of what was expressed in these Greek texts of the first Christians, they have to deconstruct layers of later dogmatic interpretation. They need to keep to descriptive terminology reflecting the Greek of the sources and to trace the origin of the metaphoric language early Christians like Paul used. This volume sets out to construct some of the Jewish and Greco-Roman patterns of thought which were initially utilised to express the meaning of the death of Christ.

Reflections on the Early Christian History of Religion documents the results of two recent workshops on Martin Hengel's and Maria Schwemer's first volume of first volume of Geschichte des frühen Christentums (Jesus und das Judentum [title of vol. 1], Tübingen 2007) and Larry Hurtado's Lord Jesus Christ: Devotion to Jesus in Earliest Christianity (Grand Rapids 2003). The contributors, including Hengel himself, focus on problems and possibilities of studying and presenting Christian religion in Roman Antiquity. They discuss distinctive features of these two remarkable publications and some material aspects that illustrate the relationship between the historical study of early Christian religion, religious studies in general and New Testament studies in particular. Mit den Erwägungen zur frühchristlichen Religionsgeschichte liegen die Ergebnisse zweier Fachtagungen vor, die sich mit dem ersten Band der Geschichte des frühen Christentums von Martin Hengel und Maria Schwemer (Jesus und das Judentum, Tübingen 2007) und Larry Hurtados Lord Jesus Christ: Devotion to Jesus in Earliest Christianity (Grand Rapids 2003) beschäftigt haben. Die Beiträge, u.a. von Hengel selbst, diskutieren Probleme und Möglichkeiten der Erforschung und Darstellung christlicher Religion in der römischen Antike. Between 1973 and 1983 three volumes of collected essays by Willem C. van Unnik appeared under the title Sparsa Collecta. All the essays in these volumes had been published between 1930 and 1970. The editors of the present volume decided to publish a fourth volume with a selection of his later papers, some of which appear here for the first time in English (they were originally published in Dutch).

This study poses and answers two questions: 1. What is the basis in the tradition for the Acts 13 and 14 narrative about Paul's and Barnabas' mission on Cyprus and in southern Galatia? 2. Who are the addressees of the letter to the Galatians?Using the extant inscriptions and literary sources that relate to the provinces of Cyprus and Galatia in the early Roman Empire, the above questions are addressed to Acts and Galatians, and answered as follows: 1 Acts 13-14 contains so much local colour as to rule out the thesis that the so-called first missionary journey is fictional. 2. Paul's letter to the Galatians is addressed to the churches in southern Galatia - Antioch, Iconium, Lystra and Derbe. The hypothesis of a north-Galatian setting is shown to be improbable in the light of the geographical, archaeological and epigraphic evidence.

This book explores how early Christian communities constructed, developed, and asserted their identity and authority in various socio-cultural contexts in Asia Minor and Greece in the first five centuries CE. With the help of the database Inscriptiones Christianae Graecae (ICG), special attention is given to ancient inscriptions which represent a rich and valuable source of information on the early Christians’ social and religious identity, family networks, authority structures, and place and function in society. This collection of essays by various specialists of Early Christianity, Epigraphy, and Late Antiquity, offers a broad geographical survey of the expansion and socio-cultural development of Christianity/ies in Asia Minor and Greece, and sheds new light on the religious transformation of the Later Roman Empire.

The chapters in this volume cover all aspects of the work of Adolf Deissmann (1866–1937). Following his main works, the authors highlight crucial aspects and impulses from his philological work on the New Testament, including the interpretation of Paul, Light from the Ancient East, the social status of the first Christians, and the lexicography of the New Testament. His background in the Lutheran Church of Hessen-Nassau, his contribution to the ecumenical movement together with Nathan Söderblom and through the Evangelische Wochenbriefe during World War II, and his role as rector of the Berlin University in 1930/1931 are also discussed. The contributions illustrate that notwithstanding his ecumenical engagement, Deissmann never gave up his scholarly work. The essays trace the influence of his philological and historical work among his students and place contemporary debates on Deissmann as philologist and theologian in their historical context.Dieser Band widmet sich in neun Einzelbeiträgen der gesamten Breite des Schaffens von Adolf Deissmann (1866–1937). This volume focuses on Christianity in Attica and its metropolis, Athens, from Paul’s initial visit in the first century up to the closing of the philosophical schools under the reign of Justinian I in the sixth century. Underscoring the relevance of epigraphic resources and the importance of methodological sophistication in analysing especially archaeological evidence, it readdresses many questions on the basis of a larger body of evidence and aims to combine literary, epigraphic, and archaeological evidence in order to create the outlines of a narrative of the rise and development of Christianity in the area. It is the first interdisciplinary study on the local history of Christianity in the area.

This volume contains the author's 'late harvest' from the fruits of half a century scholarly research in the fields of the New Testament. The essays on Paul oppose the view of history held by the 'Tubingen School' (F.C. Baur), and point out the importance of literary criticism for the theological interpretation of the pauline letters. The essays on the Letter to the Hebrews assign the appropriate historical place within early Christianity to this New Testament book. The essays on the synoptic gospels force the crisis of synoptic form criticism, and give convincing reasons for the alternative solution concerning the origin of the synoptic tradition. Five contributions complete the author's 'Theologiegeschichte des Urchristentums' edited 1994. In the second part various prominent German New Testament scholars engage into a discussion with Schmithals's contributions.

Die Dokumentation der frühesten Belege des Christentums in Thessaloniki ist ein Desideratum sowohl aus theologisch-religionswissenschaftlicher als auch aus archäologisch-kunstwissenschaftlicher Sicht. Die Idee für dieses Buch ist aus der Suche nach Zeugnissen entstanden, die die 'dunklen Jahrhunderte' zwischen der Verkündung des Evangeliums durch Paulus im Jahre 50 n. Chr. (Apostelgeschichte und Thessalonicherbriefe) und der offiziellen Einführung des Christentums als Staatsreligion erhellen könnten. Neben einigen Inschriften erweisen sich hier vor allem die ausgemalten Gräber in Thessaloniki als sichere Zeugnisse für das Christentum in der Stadt.Der Band richtet sich nicht nur an ein Fachpublikum verschiedener Disziplinen, sondern auch an interessierte Laien. Er enthält ein Glossar, in dem alle archäologischen, philologischen oder sonstige termini technici erklärt sind, und ein Register.

Berechtigung, Aufgabe, Aufbau und Durchführung einer "Theologie des Neuen Testaments" sind auch nach über 200 Jahren der Diskussion heftig umstritten. Während die einen nach religions- oder theologiegeschichtlichen Alternativen einer solchen Gesamtdarstellung der neutestamentlichen Wissenschaft suchen, fragen andere Autoren dezidiert nach der Einheit der neutestamentlichen Theologie in der Vielfalt der Entwürfe. Die Autoren der Beiträge dieses Sammelbandes erörtern die strittigen Fragen in internationaler und ökumenischer Perspektive und im Gespräch mit der Systematischen Theologie. Neben einigen programmatischen Entwürfen steht dabei die 2002 erschienene Theologie des Neuen Testaments von Ferdinand Hahn im Brennpunkt der Diskussion.

Im vorliegenden Aufsatzband stellt Cilliers Breytenbach seine Sicht der Exegese des Neuen Testaments als historische Textwissenschaft und der darauf aufbauenden Teildisziplinen (Einleitungswissenschaft, Geschichte des werdenden Christentums, besonders die Geschichte seiner Religion) dar und zeigt verschiedene Gebrauchsweisen von Exegese auf. Der Autor richtet Schlaglichter auf Aspekte des Werks wichtiger Fachvertreter wie Wilhelm Bousset, Albert Schweitzer, Adolf Deissmann, Gerhard Delling, Abraham Malherbe und Ferdinand Hahn. Er würdigt den Einfluss der katholischen Exegese seit Vaticanum II auf das Fach und zeichnet die Berliner Geschichte der Wissenschaft vom Neuen Testament anhand der dort seit Ende des 19. Jh. eingereichten Qualifikationsarbeiten nach.
