In the early 1970’s, due to serious epistemological flaws, the demise of traditional New Testament research paradigms became imminent. A new generation of scholars started the search for a fresh approach, based on scientifically sound principles. Working within the stimulating atmosphere of the New Testament Society of South Africa, the author was one of the pioneers in developing a new, multi-dimensional research approach for New Testament studies. The articles in the present volume, written over a period of 25 years, reflect part of this journey, as viewed from a Pauline perspective. Combining the positive aspects of the traditional biblical research paradigms with the important insights of modern linguistics, literary science, semantics and pragmatics, particularly rhetoric, the author investigates the convergence of various influences in Paul’s pre-christian career. He proposes new possibilities of understanding Paul’s language and style, such as hyperbolical contrasts, typical of his Semitic background. Various aspects of his strategies of persuasion are investigated, such as creating an ethos, vilification, alienation and re-identification. The majority of articles concentrate on central elements in Pauline theology: belief in the resurrection of Jesus, the centrality of grace, the in Christ and related formulae, faith and obedience, justification in Romans, Christian identity, ethics and ethos, as portrayed in Romans.

Die Dokumentation der frühesten Belege des Christentums in Thessaloniki ist ein Desideratum sowohl aus theologisch-religionswissenschaftlicher als auch aus archäologisch-kunstwissenschaftlicher Sicht. Die Idee für dieses Buch ist aus der Suche nach Zeugnissen entstanden, die die 'dunklen Jahrhunderte' zwischen der Verkündung des Evangeliums durch Paulus im Jahre 50 n. Chr. (Apostelgeschichte und Thessalonicherbriefe) und der offiziellen Einführung des Christentums als Staatsreligion erhellen könnten. Neben einigen Inschriften erweisen sich hier vor allem die ausgemalten Gräber in Thessaloniki als sichere Zeugnisse für das Christentum in der Stadt.Der Band richtet sich nicht nur an ein Fachpublikum verschiedener Disziplinen, sondern auch an interessierte Laien. Er enthält ein Glossar, in dem alle archäologischen, philologischen oder sonstige termini technici erklärt sind, und ein Register.

Berechtigung, Aufgabe, Aufbau und Durchführung einer "Theologie des Neuen Testaments" sind auch nach über 200 Jahren der Diskussion heftig umstritten. Während die einen nach religions- oder theologiegeschichtlichen Alternativen einer solchen Gesamtdarstellung der neutestamentlichen Wissenschaft suchen, fragen andere Autoren dezidiert nach der Einheit der neutestamentlichen Theologie in der Vielfalt der Entwürfe. Die Autoren der Beiträge dieses Sammelbandes erörtern die strittigen Fragen in internationaler und ökumenischer Perspektive und im Gespräch mit der Systematischen Theologie. Neben einigen programmatischen Entwürfen steht dabei die 2002 erschienene Theologie des Neuen Testaments von Ferdinand Hahn im Brennpunkt der Diskussion.

Im vorliegenden Aufsatzband stellt Cilliers Breytenbach seine Sicht der Exegese des Neuen Testaments als historische Textwissenschaft und der darauf aufbauenden Teildisziplinen (Einleitungswissenschaft, Geschichte des werdenden Christentums, besonders die Geschichte seiner Religion) dar und zeigt verschiedene Gebrauchsweisen von Exegese auf. Der Autor richtet Schlaglichter auf Aspekte des Werks wichtiger Fachvertreter wie Wilhelm Bousset, Albert Schweitzer, Adolf Deissmann, Gerhard Delling, Abraham Malherbe und Ferdinand Hahn. Er würdigt den Einfluss der katholischen Exegese seit Vaticanum II auf das Fach und zeichnet die Berliner Geschichte der Wissenschaft vom Neuen Testament anhand der dort seit Ende des 19. Jh. eingereichten Qualifikationsarbeiten nach.

This volume - a Festschrift in honour of the renowned Acts-scholar Eckhard Plümacher - contains thirteen articles on Luke's Acts of the Apostles. Presented are essays concerning Luke's language and style (Alexander, Koch, Steyn, Victor), the literary and historiographical technique applied in Acts (Moessner, Koch, Lindemann), on Luke's theology / Christology (Schröter, Vouga) and on the use (and abuse) of Acts for reconstructing aspects of the history of Early Christianity (Breytenbach, Horn, Schmithals) and for constructing theology relevant to modern culture (Vouga). Furthermore it contains a critical edition and commentary of the Martyrdom of Stephen with a discussion of its relationship to Acts (Bovon/Bouvier) and a presentation and discussion of some unknown Coptic Fragments of Acts (Bethge).

This book explores how early Christian communities constructed, developed, and asserted their identity and authority in various socio-cultural contexts in Asia Minor and Greece in the first five centuries CE. With the help of the database Inscriptiones Christianae Graecae (ICG), special attention is given to ancient inscriptions which represent a rich and valuable source of information on the early Christians’ social and religious identity, family networks, authority structures, and place and function in society. This collection of essays by various specialists of Early Christianity, Epigraphy, and Late Antiquity, offers a broad geographical survey of the expansion and socio-cultural development of Christianity/ies in Asia Minor and Greece, and sheds new light on the religious transformation of the Later Roman Empire.

The chapters in this volume cover all aspects of the work of Adolf Deissmann (1866–1937). Following his main works, the authors highlight crucial aspects and impulses from his philological work on the New Testament, including the interpretation of Paul, Light from the Ancient East, the social status of the first Christians, and the lexicography of the New Testament. His background in the Lutheran Church of Hessen-Nassau, his contribution to the ecumenical movement together with Nathan Söderblom and through the Evangelische Wochenbriefe during World War II, and his role as rector of the Berlin University in 1930/1931 are also discussed. The contributions illustrate that notwithstanding his ecumenical engagement, Deissmann never gave up his scholarly work. The essays trace the influence of his philological and historical work among his students and place contemporary debates on Deissmann as philologist and theologian in their historical context.Dieser Band widmet sich in neun Einzelbeiträgen der gesamten Breite des Schaffens von Adolf Deissmann (1866–1937). Daneben geht es um seine Herkunft aus der Evangelischen Kirche in Hessen-Nassau, um sein Wirken in der Ökumene am Beispiel der Beziehung zu Nathan Söderblom und der Arbeit an den Evangelischen Wochenbriefen im Ersten Weltkrieg sowie um seine Rolle als Rektor der Berliner Universität von 1930 bis 1931. Die Beiträge zeigen, dass Deissmann trotz seines ökumenischen Engagements seine wissenschaftliche Arbeit nicht aufgegeben hat. In this collection of thematically arranged essays on the Gospel according to Mark, the first part highlights its reception in early Christianity, its text form as an episodic narrative and its relation to contemporary genres. It recognizes Mark’s dependence on traditions from and about Jesus of Nazareth and the presupposed knowledge about the narrated locations in Galilee. The second part focuses on the discourse itself, presenting studies on style, use of metaphor, intertextuality, and strategies of persuasion. The third part treats the Christology, ethics and eschatology and the way in which the narrator gives meaning to Jesus’s death. The fourth part returns to the burning issue of what lies behind Mark and how we can study it, ending with a proposal to discuss the composition of the narrative within the framework of performance theory.
