In Sovereignty and Extortion, Claudio Lomnitz examines the Mexican state in relation to this extreme violence, uncovering a reality that challenges the familiar narratives of “a war on drugs” or a “failed state.” Tracing how neoliberal reforms, free trade agreements, and a burgeoning drug economy have shaped Mexico’s sociopolitical landscape, Lomnitz shows that the current crisis does not represent a tear in the social fabric. Rather, it reveals a fundamental shift in the relationship between the state and the economy in which traditional systems of policing, governance, and the rule of law have eroded. Este ensayo dilucida el origen del sentimiento que guardaban los revolucionarios contra los científicos, aquella élite tecnócrata de finales del Porfiriato, quizá la mas cosmopolita que México haya tenido jamás, y que parecía facilitar la inminente conquista pacífica del país por parte de Estados Unidos. Esa expresión, para Lomnitz, doctor en historia por Stanford, habría de convertirse en un discurso semejante al antisemitismo, pero cuya versión mexicana daría pie a un nacionalismo revolucionario dependiente, hipermasculino y autoritario, y que hoy tiene ramificaciones en el autoritarismo machista de la izquierda y la derecha mexicanas.

El autor muestra, también, que a pesar de la discriminación política y cultural, la capacidad de estrechar lazos familiares y el desarrollo intelectual y crítico son características humanas que florecen en las condiciones más adversas.
