Living Tradition: The Architecture and Urbanism of Hugh Petter celebrates the exceptional professional achievement of one of the world's leading traditional architects. It showcases recent highlights from Hugh's award-winning portfolio, including handsome new country houses; major alterations and refurbishment of historic buildings; a significant new building for Trinity College in Oxford; and commercial development at all scales with landed estates across the UK and beyond. His pioneering work as masterplanner for the Duchy of Cornwall is regularly cited as an exemplar of a community that reflects local identity. Written by Clive Aslet, with a foreword by The Former Prince of Wales, this book reveals how a series of iconic buildings came to be. Richly illustrated with newly commissioned photography by Dylan Thomas, one of Britain's foremost photographers of architecture and interiors, this book reveals the working process of the architect. Common to all the buildings in this book - whether a new or historic private house, a public building, or a masterwork of urban design - is a loving attention to detail and materials, and an architect who cares deeply for his craft.

Inviting, perfect in proportion, exquisite in detail such are a few of the ways to describe homes designed by John Simpson. Well known for his work with the British royal family at Buckingham and Kensington palaces and for his buildings at Eton College in the U.K. and at the University of Notre Dame in the U.S., he is perhaps most brilliant at the level of the house and home. Building Beautiful is an invitation to enter the work of this master designer, as one might visit with a treasured friend. From a dream made real within a Venetian palazzo a former seventeenth-century near-ruin, brought back to glorious, fancifully detailed life to an English countryside cottage with a thatched roof, the featured homes are expressions of Simpson s unerring eye and extraordinary sense of beauty. Here we find drama in contrasts of scale and the seductive effects of light, where a cozy reading nook opens to an expansive living room with a double-height ceiling that nevertheless feels not overly large but rather just right. This is Simpson s subtle art a mastery of scale, balance, and a pervading sense of elegance.

The Bedfordshireworks that a century ago manufactured half a billion bricks a year; theCheshire municipality striving to become the country''s firstcarbon-neutral community; the Derbyshire estate where the cottagesrepresent the gamut of European architecture; the Gloucestershirecommunity founded by Tolstoyans, who still live by anarchic principles;the Leicestershire town where pub walls are embedded with Jurassic-erafossils; the Morayshire settlement where Hogmanay is celebrated elevendays late; the Pembrokeshire fishing hamlet that inspired Dylan Thomas;the Somerset village that was built on the back of the trade inPeruvian bird droppings; the Suffolk village that is rejectingmodernity by reconstructing a windmill for grinding flour; the Surreywoodland that fosters Europe''s most ancient trees - all these areplaces that have made a unique contribution to the narrative of thiscountry.Follow Clive Aslet in visiting all five hundred villages, and you willhave experienced the history of these islands from a uniquely ruralperspective.

Old Westbury Gardens: Days of Grace on Long Island honours the life and legacy of the house that Jay Phipps built to woo his English love, Dita Grace. In his efforts to secure her hand in marriage, he promised to recreate the world of elegance, gardens, and dogs that she had known in Sussex. She said "Yes"-and the rest is Westbury.Designed in 1906 by English connoisseur and family friend George Crawley, the house was furnished with British antiques and craftsmanship, with gardens planted under Dita's discerning eye. Of the hundreds of mansions built on Long Island around the turn of the twentieth century, Old Westbury Gardens is now unique-the only one preserved in its original condition. In 1959, Peggie Phipps Boegner generously placed Old Westbury Gardens in trust, in memory of her mother, Dita, so that the public could enjoy the place where she herself had been so happy. Maintained to the highest standards of authenticity, it is now a showcase of architecture, horticulture and the decorative arts.

The Academy celebrates the architect John Simpson's newly finished building for the School of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana: the Walsh Family Hall. The language of John Simpson's architecture, which derives from the fifth century BC, has been daringly applied to new uses and an instant landmark of exceptional interest has been created. Through a judicious combination of Classical richness and warehouse-like workspace the Walsh Family Hall provides a humane and joyous series of spaces, which elevates the spirits of those entering and passing through it. This book describes not only the architecture of the Walsh Family Hall but the process whereby it came into existence, with written contributions from the generous donors, Matt and Joyce Walsh; Dean Michael Lykoudis, who commissioned the building; and some of the students who work in these uplifting surroundings. Further educational works by John Simpson such as his new 'yard' for Eton College and major new improvements to the Royal College of Music in London are described, with an essay by Simpson describing his approach. All these works are presented and explored with full colour commissioned photography, drawn plans and original sketches throughout. John Simpson Architects believes that Classicism can enhance life in the twenty-first century by creating inspirational spaces that relate to the proportions of the human body - a view of architecture that is triumphantly demonstrated in the Academy that is the Walsh Family Hall.

Clive Aslet's War Memorial: The Story of One Village's Sacrifice from 1914 to 2003, is a powerful story of those who died in war.Who were the men and women whose names are commemorated on war memorials around the country? Where did they live - and how and why did they die?Such questions usually go unanswered, but this book for the first time unravels the story of one war memorial, in the Dartmoor village of Lydford. Through original documents, Clive Aslet traces in vivid detail the lives of the twenty-two men, and one woman, who made the supreme sacrifice fighting for Britain in the two World Wars, the Falklands and Iraq. The result is an intimate portrait of one corner of the countryside in the twentieth century, and an extraordinary tale of the endurance and bravery of otherwise ordinary people - farmers, masons, railway-workers, landowners, schoolchildren - who, but for the war memorial, would be forgotten. The perfect book for those who loved The Real Dad's Army by Colonel Rodney Foster, War Memorial is about the people who laid down their lives for us, and who will always be remembered.Praise for War Memorial:'With this book Aslet makes an important contribution to social history... the stories are not tidy portraits of heroism but achingly real portraits of wartime loss experienced by a changing rural community' Daily Express'Leaves one with a profound sense of the vagaries and cruelties of fate, particularly during times of war' Country Life'[A] fascinating history . . . Aslet tells their stories with great elegance, and though the period has been gone over in exhaustive detail, he still manages fresh insights that bring it to vivid life' Daily TelegraphClive Aslet is an award-winning journalist and former Editor of Country Life who has spent his career observing Britain and its ways. Mr. Aslet is an elegant writer with a wry sense of humor.”—Moira Hodgson, Wall Street Journal “[Aslet] doesn’t just tell us who built what, and for whom, and in what style, but about the prevailing economic circumstances and fashions of each period.”—Simon Heffer, Daily Telegraph The Story of the Country House is an authoritative and vivid account of the British country house, exploring how they have evolved with the changing political and economic landscape. Clive Aslet reveals the captivating stories behind individual houses, their architects, and occupants, and paints a vivid picture of the wider context in which the country house in Britain flourished and subsequently fell into decline before enjoying a renaissance in the twenty-first century. We also meet a cavalcade of characters, owners with all their dynastic obsessions and diverse sources of wealth, and architects such as Inigo Jones, Sir John Vanbrugh, Robert Adam, Sir John Soane and A.W.N. Pugin, who dazzled or in some cases outraged their contemporaries. The Story of the Country House takes a fresh look at this enduringly popular building type, exploring why it continues to hold such fascination for us today.

The architecture and sculpture, together with the spaces between buildings, aim to create a working environment inspired by the humanist ideas of the Renaissance. All three projects are rich in architectural and sculptural symbolism. The volumes include over 150 hand drawings by Craig Hamilton; sketches, models and sculpture by Professor Alexander Stoddart, Sculptor in Ordinary to HM The King in Scotland; photography by Paul Highnam; words by Clive Aslet, visiting professor of Architecture at the University of Cambridge.

Sir Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944) was one of the great architects of the twentieth century. His Edwardian country houses, surrounded by rhapsodic gardens, beguiled clients with their romance and wit. After 1918, the war memorials that he created symbolised a grieving nation's sense of loss. In the new capital of the British Raj, New Delhi, the Viceroy's House or Rashtrapati Bhavan had a footprint bigger than Versailles. His unfinished Liverpool Cathedral would have rivalled St Peter's in Rome. Intensely shy, Lutyens hid his personality behind puns and jokes - and yet he could be called 'part mystic', a reference to an inner profundity. Rich in stories, this entertaining and stylish short biography is a major new study incorporating fresh research which shows this most charismatic of architects in a new light.

King Charles III's affection for architecture is well-known, but the extent of his engagement has never been fully presented to the public. This is the first book to draw together the many threads, from the 'carbuncle' speech, made at Hampton Court in 1984, until his accession to the throne. He has created model settlements such as Poundbury through the Duchy of Cornwall, Dumfries House in East Ayrshire has been made a beacon of social regeneration, and his educational initiatives have changed lives. The four decades of the King's commitment to architecture have coincided with Clive Aslet's career as a journalist, during which he has followed the story and often written about it, not least during the 13 years for which he was editor of Country Life. King Charles III: 40 Years of Architecture is based on new research including many interviews with the architects, critics, advisors and academics who worked with the (then) Prince of Wales on his far-reaching endeavours.

As in the past, anyone who builds a country house today will want the first sight of it to impress, but they will also have requirements suited to 21st-century life. ADAM Architecture has an international reputation for its diverse portfolio, and its country houses are among the practice's most admired work. 'The Country House Ideal' explores the way in which ADAM Architecture uses historical precedents, including construction techniques, materials and layout, to give expression to thoroughly modern projects. While the practice is famed for classical design, the houses featured here are far from pastiche, and could have been built at no other time than our own. Architectural historian Jeremy Musson first sets the modern country house in its rich historical context, then presents a series of magnificent new houses, arranged into chapters reflecting a variety of traditional styles: Anglo-Classical, Rural Romantics, Palladian and Neoclassical. This lavishly illustrated book reveals how, in an ADAM Architecture design, such considerations as energy conservation, technology and sustainability receive meticulous attention all in pursuit of the country house ideal. AUTHOR: Jeremy Musson is an architectural historian, writer and broadcaster. Formerly Architectural Editor of Country Lifemagazine, he is the author of 'English Ruins' (with Paul Barker; Merrell, 2011) and several books on English country houses, including 'English Country House Interiors' (2011). This book is a sumptuously produced journey around twelve privately owned country houses, asking what it is like to live in suchplaces today. What role do they play in the twenty-first century? For many years after the Second World War, the country housewas struggling. Now a new generation of young owners, often with children, has taken over. They're finding innovative ways to live in these ancient, fragile and poetic places. While they treasure the history and beauty of the houses, they're also adapting and enhancing them for a modern era. Old Homes, New Life is a behind-the-scenes account of today's aristocracy, as they reinvent the country house way of life. Each family does this in its own way, maintaining the tradition of individualism, even eccentricity, which is so much associated with country houses. Dylan Thomas's superb yet intimate photographs capture boththe inhabitants of these houses and the spaces they occupy - from State dining to family kitchen, walled garden to attic. This feast for the eyes is accompanied by an equally mouth-watering text by Clive Aslet, based on interviews with family members and his long experience of the subject through his years as Editor of Country Life. The result is an exclusive tour of a dozen spectacular homes.

The history of collecting natural history specimens touches upon many aspects of our past. The fascination with nature was at least as important for its view of humanity as for science. One telling example is the Timm Natural Collection at Engelsberg Ironworks, created by the ironworks proprietor Gabriel Casper Timm and his son Paul August in the nineteenth century.
Throughout their lives, they devoted much of their leisure time to collec-ting plants, insects, minerals and other treasures of nature. Some came from near their home in Västmanland, Sweden, while others were collected from across Scandinavia. Father and son were in close contact with collectors and scientists, and at the same time built up a library consisting of volumes on natural science along with books on spirituality and faith. Ultimately, collec-ting natural history specimens reflected a kind of wonder about creation.
Collecting Nature places the Timm Natural Collection in a larger context so that the reader encounters other collectors, thinkers, and scientists of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In the book, a picture is created of how the world of ideas in collecting has developed and continues to influence us even today.
