Das Buch erörtert zunächst das pädagogische Selbstverständnis der Kindertageseinrichtungen als Bildungs-, Erziehungs- und Betreuungseinrichtung vor dem Hintergrund sich wandelnder gesellschaftlicher Herausforderungen. Im Mittelpunkt steht dann die Frage nach elementarpädagogischen und elementardidaktischen Konzepten und zwar in zweifacher Hinsicht: einmal im Hinblick auf die von der Wissenschaft gelieferten Konzepte, zum anderen im Hinblick auf die in der Ausbildung vermittelte und im KiTa-Alltag praktizierte Methodik und Didaktik. Das Buch skizziert darauf aufbauend die Grundlinien einer (bislang fehlenden) erziehungswissenschaftlich fundierten Didaktik der Pädagogik der frühen Kindheit in Kindertageseinrichtungen für Kinder vom ersten bis zum sechsten Lebensjahr.
